Holiday Cottage

Cottage at Prickwillow
cottage

In late 1980, following the death of my Auntie Evelyn, from whom I inherited some money, we decided to invest in a holiday cottage within easy reach of Romford. Having seen several buildings in various states of disrepair, we were delighted to find our little bungalow at Prickwillow in Cambridgeshire (around 70 miles from home). Although not brickbuilt, it was clean and nicely decorated - two reception rooms, two bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom. It needed rewiring, which we did ourselves, with the help of our sons, but otherwise it was ready for immediate occupation.

Since it is situated alongside the River Lark, we bought a small row-boat with outboard engine. Stan and I were not too keen, especially when we were attacked by an angry swan, but it gave our sons much enjoyment, and is now sometimes used by our grandchildren. We have bicycles there too for anyone with plenty of energy.

Our former neighbour, Patrick, was responsible for sparking our interest in the restoration of the Prickwillow Drainage Engine, and the establishing of a Museum on the site.
