to download Muse0.exe (309725 bytes, "303K" bytes) which is a self-extracting zip file. When you run it it will create ("unzip") Muse.exe, Muse.hlp, readme.txt and six sample music files, which are all the components of Muse.

It will ask you where you wish to create them - it doesn't matter, but put them all in the same directory. (C:\muse if you can't think of a better place)

of course you get 30 days free and some functions (e.g. displaying ABC) are just plain free.

You may want to update your start menu to include Muse (see below).

I've tried several different ways of packaging Muse and I have arrived at this one so as to
  1. Minimise download time. (You load down compressed files with nothing extraneous).
  2. Leave you in charge. I hate automated install programs that scatter stuff all over your machine and which can make programs difficult to uninstall. To uninstall Muse just delete Muse0.exe that you downloaded and the files it unzipped into (Muse.exe, Muse.hlp, readme.txt and the four samples).
  3. Although editing your own start menu might seem like a nuisance, it actually is no more bother than going through a set of install panels, and it does leave you in charge of your machine.

How to edit your start menu (e.g. to include Muse)

Open Windows explorer (or Windows NT explorer) and get to wherever you put muse.exe
Leave that open, RIGHT click on the Start button and choose Explore.
You will see all the stuff in your start menus, looking like folders. Choose where in the start menu you want Muse and with the RIGHT hand mouse button drag Muse.exe from where you found it to the place in the Start menu where you want it. When you let go a little menu will give you some choices. One of them is
Create shortcut(s) here

Do that. Close down the explorers you just opened and you have Muse in your start menu.

If you make a mistake, type Ctrl+Z, which means "UNDO"!

If you drag it to the desktop background instead of to the start menu stuff you can create a shortcut on the desktop.
