Developmental Coordination Disorder - DCD - (previously known as 'clumsy child syndrome') can affect up to one person in 10 in some degree. In the UK the condition is known as Developmental Dyspraxia.

The following is a summary of information known of the condition.

  • Boys are 4 times as likely as girls to have Developmental Co-ordination Disorder.
  • Children with DCD to NOT grow out of the condition. A 'Clumsy Child' will grow into a 'clumsy' adult.
  • Research has found that three quarters of children in alternative education may have co-ordination prblems. Later research has shown that over half the prisoners at a Young Offenders Institute had perceptual problems as well as DCD.
  • Baseline Assessment in the UK - targeted at children in Reception Class (Kindergarden in the US) is the perfect opportunity for children with Apraxia/ Clumsy Child Syndrome to be detected.
  • Children with DCD can, with experience, be targeted almost from birth through a range of characteristics. It is not the parent's fault if the condition is not diagnosed.
  • Simple dietary supplements can often dramatically improve children who have coordination difficulties.
  • Structured Exercise programmes can correct many of the motor co-ordination problems. Before the age of eight rapid improvements are made and even older children can benefit.
  • There are several developmental disorders - the most common are Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and Autistic Spectrum Disporders e.g. Asperger's. Most conditions have overlapping characteristics and many children may have been wrongly diagnosed through inaccurate use of 'checklists'.
  • A Child with one of the above conditions has nearly a 50% chance of having another.
