Axis, Foundation for Gender and the Arts, was founded in 1997. Axis initiates and organizes projects such as exhibitions, film and video programmes, symposia and lectures in the area of the visual arts (including new media), performing arts, literature, music and mass media. The introduction of the term "gender," which relates the definition of the sexes to their changing context, and of the concepts "transgender" and "queer," broader interpretations of "gay" and "lesbian," marks the new range of visions on sexual identity. In its programming, Axis focuses on the interchange between the development of these theories and art practice, and seeks to show the influence of unconventional views about sexual identity in art. Special focuses of attention are visions of the future (a theme that was raised by the Avatar event, in response to developments in digital culture), commentary on the mass media (discussed in the "F/M on TV" debates on the basis of the rise of the woman detective), and intercultural interactions (on gender and the visual arts in a worldwide perspective, brought together in the web project "Changing Images").
