Well regarded look at Modernity in art and architecture, very informative and a good read, with many great pictures of some of the most influential works of the 20th century

A book from one of the leading lyric writers of his day. Very good on the early development. A good reference/starting point for those interested in the early years in particular chapters 1-4 are a must.

Mates, J(1985)America’s Musical Stage New York: Praeger

General history including black musicals and Minstrelsy. a good read and rather good on analysis, but I have to say some of what he suggests is very debatable!  However this book is also a must.

Well regarded historical reference work.
