Well from now on you do not have to, Free ISPs are sweeping the country with new services launched at every turn round. There is a bewildering choice of services with everyone hoping to cash in on the current craze.

Now as plain vanilla Free ISPs become old hat a new craze has hit the Free ISPs circuit. Free ISPs that as well as providing services comparable to most other ISPs are giving away a share of the company in the form of 'units' or real shares.

Altavista the American search engine and portal site announced plans to offer unlimited free call access to the Internet for a fee. The initial sign on fee will be £30 - £50 and an annual registration fee of £10 - £20. The service will hope to recruit 500,000 users in the first six months and signups will start in around 3 months time. The Free Share ISP myISP has been spending heavily to raise its profile. Reinforcing its links with the travel industry, myISP is sponsoring "Independent Travellers World" from 28 - 30 January at the London Arena and then in Edinburgh from 5 - 6 Febuary. Combined an estimated 26,000 visitors will attend the shows. Both exhibitions will be closely linked to myISP's online travel club launched in association with Online Travel. Furthermore there will be adverts in magazines like T3, .Net, Internet Works, Internet Monthly and Internet Investor. It does not end there myISP is spending a 6 figure sum on a 13 week radio ad campaign on Kiss FM. Finally they have perimeter ads with Leicester Rugby Club. - Jan 26

Newspaper group Newsquest has teamed up with internet group Freeserve in its online auctions business. Newsquest is to take a 9.9% stake in Freeserve Auctions, a subsidiary of the internet company. The publishing group will pay Freeserve £2 million in cash for the stake and provide £10 million worth of free advertising for the online auctions company in its newspapers. The deal will also see Newsquest merge its AuctionHunter business into Freeserve Auctions, which will be appear as the auction service on the publisher's regional newspaper web sites. Following the deal Freeserve Auctions will be 72.1% owned by Freeserve, 9.9% by Newsquest and 18% by United States group Auctions.com. - Jan 24
