Domain Name Registration Rules



Rules apply to the beginning of the domain name excluding the domain name suffix.(e.g. mmprojects if registering mmprojects.co.uk)


Rules for All Domain Names

  • The only characters that are allowed in a domain name are letters, digits and a hyphen (-), however the domain name cannot end in a hyphen.
  • A Domain name may not contain any spaces.
  • The Domain name can be upto 26 characters long and cannot be less than 3 characters.
  • www. is not part of a domain name, it is used after registration to identify a Web Site using that domain.

Rules for .co.uk & .com

Rules for .ltd.uk & .plc.uk

  • Names ending in .ltd.uk & .plc.uk are for use by companies registered with Companies House, each company may only register the name that corresponds to their registered company name, excluding the Limited or plc part of their company name.

Rules for .net.uk & .net

  • Names ending in .net.uk & .net are intended only for use by organisations involved in the provision of Internet infrastructure services.

Rules for .org.uk & .org

  • Names ending in .org.uk & .org are intended for use by non-profit making organisations. Only one .org.uk and/or one .org name should be registered per organisation.
