10 interesting facts that you may or may not know about Prince Philip.

 

  1. Prince Philip was born in Greece and became known to the public as 'Phil the Greek'. However , his ancestry was actually Danish and German and he had little historic connections with Greece.
  2. Like his wife the Queen, Prince Philip is a grandchild of Queen Victoria.
  3. In 1922, when Prince Philip was only 18 months old, he was forced to leave Greece with his father. On the ship on which he sailed , HMS Calypso, he slept in a crib made for him by the sailors out of an orange box.
  4. His full title is HRH The Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, KG, KT, OM, CBE, AC, QSO, PC.
  5. While the Queen was in labour with their daughter Anne, Prince Philip was playing squash, although he did take her flowers and champagne later on.
  6. Prince Philip launched the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme in 1956. Other countries later adopted the scheme around the world under different titles to avoid giving him the credit. In the USA, for example, the Congressional Award was introduced in 1978.
  7. Due to his close association with the Variety Club of Great Britain Prince Philip was made a 'Life Clown' in 1949.
  8. Prince Philip once acted as a stooge for Tommy Cooper in a comedy-magic routine.
  9. In 1966, a Miami businessman offered Prince Philip $100,000 for the Variety Club if he would swim in his private pool. Prince Philip duly obliged and stripped off and dived in. 
  10. Prince Philip was against giving Princess Diana a public funeral as he felt she was no longer part of the Royal Family. It was only after Prince Charles had stood up to his father that the public funeral with royal trimmings was able to proceed.
