Nikolay Nikolayevich. 1831-1891. Russian grand duke. 3d son of
Czar Nicholas I; commanded Russian army of the Danube in
Russo-Turkish War (1877-78). His son ³Grand Duke Nicholas, Russ.
Nikolay Nikolayevich (1856-1929) was commander in chief, St.
Petersburg military district (1905-14); in World War I,
commander in chief against Germany and Austria-Hungary
(1914-1915); viceroy and commander in chief in the Caucasus
(1915-17); after Revolution lived in the Crimea (1917-19) and in
France (from 1919); chosen leader of Russian monarchists in
exile in France (1926).
