LP was a merchant of Oporto in the port wine trade. Wife Jane came from another family of London wine shippers, the CLARKEs. 1798 By this date LP owned a London firm of wine merchants with son Richard. Living in Oporto but Portugal was then under French threat. 1800 After this date LP lived at The Retreat, Lyme Regis, Dorset. LP settled the affairs of his drowned brothers Daniel & John who both died at sea working in the Newfoundland fishing trade. 1804 The Pennell Newfoundland business was wound up. 1805 LP and brother Wm had a big quarrel with their cousin Thomas FOLLETT re the Liverpool trade. There was a decline in port wine trade 1807 on. 1810 LP was a sleeping partner of brother WilliamPENNELL and Thomas FOLLETT in Liverpool re Waterford & Liverpool businesses. Lovell "only one with wits about him" (J.W.Croker Sec of Admiralty.) 1810 Liquidation of Liverpool branch & Irish firm also in trouble. LP wished to re-open his Oporto dealings when politics allowed. 1819 27 Sep Admin of his goods to son William, his wife Jane having renounced her right to execute Will. Family has M.I's in St Michael Archangel church, Lyme Regis
Conveyance of a mesuage in Topsham 22 Nov 1817 being a house in Chappell Place. The devisees in trust of Mrs Sarah Pennell to John Lock. Between Lovell Pennell of Lyme Regis, gent. and William Pennell now resident in the Brazils in S America Gent, of the 1st part. John Lock of Topsham ropemaker, of the 2nd part & John Terrell of Exeter gent , of the 3rd part, Richard Lewin yngr late of Greenwich in Kent but now of 14 Bow Lane Cheapside, London, Esq. surviving exec of Richard Pennell formerly of Mount Edford in Woodbury but afterwards Capt of the ship "Hawke" HEIC now deceased 4th part and John Pope of Topsham 5th part.
Sarah widow, gave property to her 2 sons, Lovell & Wiliam. They held a public auctionto sell it and John Lock bought it for £120.
