Notes for Prince Nikolai Nikolayevich Romanov Of Russia
Nikolai Nikolayevich (1856-1929), Russian grand duke and army officer, born in Saint Petersburg; he was a nephew of Emperor Alexander II and was educated for the military service. As a member of the Russian general staff he distinguished himself during the war with Turkey (1877-78). Becoming inspector general of the cavalry in 1895, he introduced training and organizational reforms in the cavalry schools. In 1905 he was appointed commander in chief of the St. Petersburg military district and made president of the newly created council for national defense. At the outbreak of World War I he was appointed commander in chief of the Russian army. The following year Emperor Nicholas II personally took command of the Russian armies, and the grand duke was made commander in the Caucasus region. In 1917, after the Russian Revolution, the grand duke went into exile in Paris, where he spent his remaining years.
