for Kent land At Canons-leigh are the remains of a Benedictine
nunnery, founded by Maud Countess of Devon in the time of Henry
111.in the place of a house of Augustin Canons established by
W.Clavell in the reign of Henry 11. It was dedicated to the
Virgin Mary,St John the Evangelist and St Ethelreda, in the
spring of the year 1539 there were 18 nuns and revenues of ¦197.
The greater portion of the building was then razed during the
dissolution of the Monasteries.
