| Notes for Sir Richard Grenville |
|
English naval officer, born in Cornwall. He headed the fleet of
seven ships in which colonists organized by his cousin, the
English soldier and explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, went (1585) to
Roanoke Island, N.C. In 1591 Grenville sailed to the Azores,
with Lord Thomas Howard, as second-in-command of an expedition
sent to capture a Spanish treasure fleet. His ship, the
Revenge, was cut off from the rest of the English fleet and was
captured by the Spanish after a battle in which Grenville was
mortally wounded. The battle is described in "The Revenge," a
ballad by the British poet Alfred Lord Tennyson.
