Ambrose Hardinge GIFFARD was the Chief Justice Ceylon. (Giffard Fam Hist Vol V, Staffs Hist. College by Maj General WROTTESLEY). Descended from an ancient Devon family. Gt2 grandfather John had settled in Brightlea, Ireland and he disinherited his son, Ambrose's grandfather AHG named for Ambrose Hardinge a friend of his father's. AHG met J W Croker at Dublin University and they remained lifelong friends. AHG Called to Bar & met his wife Harriet Pennell in Dublin. 1822 Poetry published in Ceylon. 1827 Ambrose died of heart attack aboard the "Lady Kennaway" Hon. East India Co. ship when returning to England. MI St Hieritha Chttlehampton, also to Ambrose Hardinge GIFFARD eldest son of (John) "who had intended to erect this tablet to his father's memory but was prevented by his own death on 30th May 1827 in his 57th year on shipboard while returning to England after an absence of many years of legal & judicious service in Ceylon" erceted by his son Edward GIFFARD.
