Naval Records 1835 Oct 30 Ist commission 1835 1 Nov Lt. of HMS "Cruizer" 16 guns N E America station 1838 Feb 14 Lt of HMS "Medea" a steamer. W Indies station 1839 Nov 27 HMS "Cyclops" steamer 1840 Active in operations off Syrian coast affording his Capt. able assistance in attack on tower of Gebail on 12 Sep, being one of landing party that advanced to walls but was forced through losses to retire. 1840 Nov 4 Promoted Commander 1841 Cmdr. GG R.N. aged 25 at Park Cottage, East Molesey, with mother Harriet GIFFARD, widow 1843 Jan 5 HMS " Vixen" a steam sloop attached to a force in E Indies, his ship& crew destroying a nest of pirates. 1845 Aug 19th Under Sir Thomas Cochrane CinC, made an attack on settlement of Maloodoo, N Borneo. Stayed off coast there to finish off pirates. 1845 26 Dec Promoted Captain 1849 On half pay. 1851 Captain GG R.N. of Thames St. Hampton, Middlesex with brother Edward. His visitor Magdelene E. Murrey or should it read Magdelene C. Mushet? aged 25, born London. He married a Magdelene Christian Mushet 1860's Living at The Cedars, Sunbury, Middesex. GG aged 35 , wife MG aged 25? or 35? His mother died here. Wrote "Reminiscences of a Naval Officer" Said to have been careful with money & ugly with a crooked nose. Had a "poor relations" room in his house! He lived for 2 yrs at Ashridge nr. North Tawton, Devon. 1872 GG of Lyttlehall, Nutfield, Surrey. In Will of gt-aunt Louisa Pennell. 1881 GG aged 65, b Ceylon, Admiral RN. KCB of Brightley House, Miller Lane, Burstow, Surrey. 2 ladies' maids, parlour maid, house maid & kitchen maid. Family story is that he took all the family monies and did his Pennell relatives out of their share!
