Daniel King at 17:6:0 Sunday February 13 2000
Don't really know much about Martin, but he's really good on Premier Manager 99. I'm a Darlington fan, and unfortunately the minutes silence we kept in honour of Aldridge was cut short because our game was on Sky and it didn't fit in with their schedule.
Mark Hasney at 9:31:30 Sunday February 13 2000
I go to the the school where Martin used to go and all the teachers say that he couldn't get into there team but he built on that and took his quality and skill to Northampton where he learnt his trade as a proffesional footballer and then he took his skill to other clubs such as Oxford,Blackpool and last Rushden and Diomends my commisorations to his friends and family he will be sadly missed.
Scott Cullen at 13:16:54 Saturday February 12 2000
Goodbye Aldridge!!
Tom (OUFC) at 21:2:16 Friday February 11 2000
The minutes silence at the Manor was a the most poignant moment of any football match I have ever been to. Never has a silence at the Manor been so perfectly observed by every single person in the ground. The game itself had no meaning, despite it's huge importance, on a day when 5000 people were truly able to put football into perspective. Everyone at United misses you Martin. RIP.

Martin first came to my knowledge by his surname! I noticed that he was scoring regular and have followed his career since, with his time at Oxford and Blackpool and his loan spells at Rushden and Port Vale. I don't think that I actually saw Martin play live, but when I him on tv he always worked his socks off, a true players' player. Martin will be missed by all the football community as his goals gave people so much please.
Rest in Peace Martin,
God bless.

He really was a fantasic bloke! I'll miss bumping into you Martin! I'll come visit when I get back to England. You'll be greatly missed. Rest In Peace Sweetheart!

There are very few words I can say after such a tragic loss and my deepest sympathy goes out to all of Martin's family and close friends.
I remember Martin as an 18 year-old when he spent a short time on loan at kings lynn where he made such a big impact with everybody around him. Everyone at the club was devastated when martin returned back to northampton following his loan spell, myself especially as I used to chat regularly to his dad, who would always come and watch Martin play.

We are putting together a special book containing all the messages posted on our own message board and possibly those that lay here and elsewhere. We hope to present this to Martin's Family I'm sure they will be astounded at the sheer number of messages posted. We have on our list a member of the religious community Fr. Damian Feeney (The Bishop of Blackburn's Mission Priest to Longsands, Preston) He has written a forewood to the book in the form of a tribute which will appear on the front underneath a photograph of Martin. I thought you might like to read his words.
Martin Aldridge 1974 – 2000
The tragic and premature death of Martin Aldridge at the age of 25 sent shock waves echoing around the whole community of football. The death of a young man is always tragic; it speaks of promise left unfulfilled, hopes and dreams shattered. When that young man possessed such promise and skill, as Martin did, the feelings of sorrow and injustice simply seem to multiply.
The tributes in this book come from all over the country, from supporters of non-league clubs all the way to clubs at the very heights of our national game. Clearly Martin was someone who made things happen on the field, whoever he was playing for. The number of tributes from supporters of Oxford United, Northampton Town and Rushden & Diamonds bear witness to that.
Notice also the tributes from the teams Martin played against – a feared opponent, capable of great skill and surprise in taking on defences. And, as ever, the trademark somersault by way of celebration. Martin cannot and will not be forgotten at any of his clubs.
It is our hope that this collection of the tributes, which Martin has inspired, will comfort and console his family and those closest to him in the difficult days ahead. May this gathering of the thoughts and prayers of the whole football community, united in grief with them at his loss, strengthen them. Ultimately I believe that Martin’s promise, those hopes and dreams, will be fulfilled in Christ in a way we have no way of imagining.
May Martin rest in peace and know the joy of heaven.

Sincere condolences to the families of the bereaved. It's terrible that this should happen to anyone let alone two people so young. No-one will ever forget Martin scoring the first ever goal at Sixfields, he has sealed his place in history. The fans empathized with him because he was a Northamptonshire boy, one of our own. I hope the club will think of a fitting tribute. Rest in Peace.

My sincere sympathy goes to the families of Gail Ashwell and Martyn Aldridge.
I knew neither of them but I know how loved they will have been by their families.
What a tragedy that they should have been lost to you all when travelling home from participating in the game they enjoyed - whether as spectator or player.
God be with you all.

I remember looking and reading the story and thinking what a waste of a talented human beings life. I didn't really take a keen interest in Martin Aldridge's career but as a football fan I think we all share the loss. May your sole rest in peace.

I have just returned from abroad to learn of Martin Aldridge's death. As an Oxford United supporter for over 30 years, I would like to say how terrible the news of his death is. All my sympathy to Gails family such a loss of a great girl and a friend to many she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
condolences also to Martin's family, known by many. A minutes silence would be a lovely tribute to both.
Daventry Yellows at 22:42:51 Wednesday February 2 2000
We can't believe the sad news of Martin Aldridge’s untimely death, we were so proud of Martin when he signed for the Northampton Town from Daventry’s Ford Sports and even more so when he pulled on the yellow shirt for Oxford United. Unfortunately Martin’s career at Oxford United was too short, but we have some great memories of Martin scoring for Oxford especially his hat trick against Sheffield United and his brave goal against Swindon Town. Martin will be sadly missed by all whom he entertained with his skill and commitment. It is ironic that our game on Saturday is against Blackpool, the last club Martin was signed with. We should be respectful but we should also celebrate his life as a great footballer. Our deepest sympathy goes to Martin's family and friends.
Rest in Peace Martin

Lee Chamberlain ( Cobblers fan) at 22:9:24 Wednesday February 2 2000
RIP Martin Aldridge- I will always remember the goals you scored for Northampton Town FC, the goal you scored against Barnet (first ever goal at Sixfields Stadium) will go down in history. What Cobblers fan could ever forget the sommersault celebration for that goal.
Football fans around the country unite as one family at sad times like this. My sympathy goes out to Martin's immediate family and close friends.
You will never be forgotten at NTFC.
God bless.
Deepcut Cobbler at 21:38:43 Wednesday February 2 2000
RIP Martin Aldridge. Potential never totally fulfilled. It was only Friday I was thinking that the return of Martin would have filled the Daryl Clare gap for the Cobblers. Sadly that will never be. Football unites as one family whatever colours you wear. The postings have demonstrated that. It is at times like this that rivalry's are put into perspective and we join as one. A minutes silence at all games on Saturday is the least. To Martin and Gail Ashwell, a fellow Cobblers fan tragically taken from us the same night. RIP.

I remember what a good player he was at Northampton, he came into the first team at the same time I started watching the Cobblers. He could have been an even greater player. Blackpool and Oxford were also lucky enough to have seen Martin play for their club just like us and I'm sure they are thinking of him too.My sympathy goes out to Martins' family and also to Gails'what a terrible thing to happen to someone who loved her club enough to follow them all over the country. Its times like these when footballing rivalries need to be put aside and forgotten.
I don't personally remember Martin Aldridge, as I was quite young when he played against CUFC, but from what I have heard he is one of these players who, like for example, Will Varty now of Rotherham and once Carlisle, could well have made it big time, had it not been for other circumstances such as injury.
My condolences also go out to Gail's family....its always a great loss when a dedicated fan passes away, but in these circumstances, it makes it even more tragic.
May they both rest in peace.

I've known Martin since he first came as a 'lad'. I will remember him as a nice lad with a wide grin. He was happiest playing football and I believe he would have regarded it as a dream come true to have had his career with the Cobblers. I saw him a number of times after he left us, he was so full of life and Joy. What a sad sad loss, a sad, sad day. I don't think I knew Gail but from what I read the same applies. What can you say to the families other than we share your grief.

I was deeply shocked and upset to learn of the death of Martin in such tragic circumstances at the weekend. My thoughts are with Martin's family and all at Northampton, Oxford, Blackpool and Rushden at what must be an awful time for you all.
Just as I was getting over this shock, I learned of the death of Gail after watching her team play. As a fanatical Bristol Rovers supporter I experienced one of the worst nights of my life at the same time she must have been having one of her happiest. It may sound strange to a non-football fan but I am now glad that she experienced what must have been a wonderful night for her. Deepest condolences to her family, friends and, again, all at Northampton Town.
RIP Martin and Gail. God bless you both.

As a Blackpool fan I have had the great pleasure to see Martin play on a number of occasions and I always thought he had great ability and potential. Judging by the comments from supporters of his other clubs, Daventry, Northampton, Oxford, Blackpool and Rushden, I am obviously not alone and can see what a good impression he made on all of us. A sad day for all and once again condolences to both Families.

I am not there.
I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that swiftly blow.
I am the diamond glint on newly fallen snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the soft and gentle autumn rain.
When you awake from sleep in the early morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft, starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there.
I do not sleep. RIP Gail x

May you grow up to be righteous, may you grow up to be true, may you always know the truth and see the lights surrounding you. May you always be courageous, stand upright and be strong, May you stay forever young. I was shocked to hear of the news to say the least. Being a OUFC supporter watched Martin quite a few times, he was always a trier. Followed his progress at Blackpool and R&D and though his time would come in the big time. Deepest Sympathy to all concerned. Seemed like only yesterday that we were in the Manor Bar drinking only a few yards away from Him.
May he rest in Peace.

Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I, and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was, let it be spoken without effect, without the shadow of a ghost in it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was:there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner...All is well.
Rest in peace Martin and Gail. All our prayers are with you and your family.

I have just learned, with deep sadness of Martin Aldridge's death. My first memories of him was when I joined Daventry Athletics Club in 1992. I was amazed by the speed he and his colleagues ran around the track during training. Martin's talent in athletics matched that of his football, he was one of the best in the country on reaching when the English Schools Championships. Football took priority when he signed as a trainee at Northampton Town, but he still kept his links with Daventry Athletics Club. At that time I began following the Cobblers, standing in the family enclosure of the county ground, now amazed by Martin's football. I attended most of the home matches until last year when A-levels, athletics and university commitments halted my attendance. I will never forget the goal he scored against Barnet and the celebrational somersault. Throughout his career I kept track of his performances , particularly a hattrick he scored against Sheffield, for which I have kept, amongst many others, a press cutting. It was a huge coincidence that on the day the results of the Northants Cross-Country Championships were published in the Chronicle and Echo two weeks ago both a report of myself and Martin appear on the same page, reporting on his move to Rushden. That was a dream come true, a chance to see Martin play locally again. I am devastated, all my sympathies go out to Peter, family and friends. I shall dedicate my race for Loughborough Uni this weekend in the British University Cross-Country Championships at Edinburgh to my inspiration. Rest in peace Martin and Gail.
Will Thornton at 14:35:30 Tuesday February 1 2000

I was devastated to read of Martin's death. It is always sad when it happens & the younger people are when it happens the more it seems to hurt. I remember vividly Martin's hattrick against Sheffield & thought it typical of him. He gave good service to the Club I always felt he was one of Denis's three best signings, the others being Elliott & Whitehead. I would also like to say that I too thought he got a roughe ride from the OUFc management. My heart(and my thoughts) goes out to his family & that of Gail Ashwell too. I did not have the opportunity to meet him,but what Stuart says reinforces my impression of him of a down-to-earth sort of guy.
