| Leading the Ethnic
Minority Liberal Democrats Nationally Cllr Fiyaz Mughal who was
recently elected in May 2002 to be the City Councillor for the
Holywell Ward based in the heart of Oxford, was also elected
overwhelmingly to be the Chair of a constituted branch of the
Liberal Democrats, known as the Ethnic Minority Liberal Democrats (EMLD).
Cllr Fiyaz Mughal represents a mainly student based ward and
recently was on the march organised by the Stop the War Coalition on
the 15th of February 2003. Fiyaz will lead the EMLD which has over
300 members. He has been actively involved with the EMLD for 2 years
and has helped to promote and advocate for diversity issues within
the Party. He has been instrumental in developing the EMLD by
building up its membership base, fundraising and promoting it
through ethnic minority press outlets. Quizzed on where he wanted to
lead EMLD Fiyaz stated that “the Liberal Democrats are the only
Party who have taken a pragmatic and informed approach to issues
like asylum seekers and the war on Iraq. They support and promote
the diversity agenda whilst pushing back stereotypes that are
consolidated by the Tories and Labour. We are driving forward the
notion of understanding and respect for diverse communities.”

Ex-OULD member to fight Westbury seat at next general election
Duncan Hames, a former OULD member is a Lib Dem Prospective
Parliamentary Candidate for the next general election. Duncan was a
distinguished member if the
Union
and studied PPE at New
College just a few years ago. He is standing in the Westbury seat, which
only needs a 6% swing to fall his way. More details about Duncan can be

OULD Success in
OUSU elections
The Oxford University Liberal Democrats achieved pleasing success in the
recent OUSU elections, with five delegates and three executive members
being elected on the popular ‘Lib Dems for Students’ slate. More detail
