Peter May MIITT
Professional Resumé

 

     Peter May is a Systems Management Consultant and technical trainer writing and teaching technical computing courses for end users.

     He is a specialist in two IBM/Tivoli system management products

  • Tivoli Information Management for z/OS (also known as Info/Man & Tivoli Service Desk)
  • Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS (also known as Operations Planning and Control - OPC)
     From 1989 to 2003 he worked for IBM (UK) where he wrote and taught courses regularly scheduled in IBM's UK, Belgium and Netherland's Education catalogues, Peter taught many one-company special classes for customers such as Safeway, Lloyds Bank, Allied Dunbar, BT and Barclays Bank. He has been taught classes in Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Italy, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Thailand and the USA.

     Customer reviews of Peters courses frequently remark on the humour he brings to the subjects, his in depth knowledge and helpfulness in getting that knowledge across.

     A cost effective way for customers to gain the required skills is to book a skills transfer session where Peter works alongside them at their desk, using the customers computer systems, teaching the necessary skills and answering questions.

    Course Development     

     Peter May has written many courses for IBM, Tivoli and others. Since 1989 he created and updated courses on OPC and Info/Man, internet, and HTML. He has also written web based training. He wrote an e-business awareness course for Unilever accompanied by a 450 page student manual. For the Cabinet Office of the e-Envoy he wrote a 230 page student manual.

    He is experienced in using MS-Word, Framemaker, MS-Powerpoint, Lotus Freelance, Paintshop Pro. He has an excellent knowledge of HTML and web-site design.

     Courses he wrote which are currently in the IBM/Tivoli catalogue include EA76, TM39, TM40, TM44, TM45 and TM46.

     Since leaving IBM in January 2003 Peter has written and taught a two day course for IBM Sweden, three 1 day courses for a bank in Saudi Arabia, a two day course for a company in Ireland and a four day course for a UK government department.

    Information Management (Info/Man)    

     Recently Peter has given Info/Man skills transfer training sessions for Barclays Bank and Safeway.

     At Grattan plc where he worked with dependent validation lists and wrote SLA reports. At SingTel he assisted with upgrading Info/Man and gaining Y2K compliance. For Lloyds Bank he wrote a new problem management information gathering process.

     At BT Peter designed and implemented a problem and change management process using Info/Man, IBM's database tool for problem, change and configuration automation. He customised Info/Man to BTs requirements and, in the first six months, system down time was reduced by 70 per cent.

     For Thames Water Peter created a tailored Info/Man course and trained 200 staff in 22 classes on their premises. many trainees had no IBM background and some had never used a computer. The project manager co-ordinating training stated "attendees remarked on Peter's grasp of the subject and his ability to convey complex concepts."

     Southern Electric invited Peter to advise them on Info/Man training. He gained the customers commitment to invest £30K in a training programme of 3 courses and 31 classes. Participants consistently commented on the comprehensive notes, the professionalism of the instructor, and benefit of the course in performing their job.

     Peter recognised the need for IBM to focus more on end user training and developed a popular one day course showing how to use Info/Man more effectively. Responding to customers asking how to build Info/Man reports Peter created a 3 day course which covers almost everything about reporting. Peter grew the Info/Man curriculum from one 5 day course to four courses totalling thirteen days, profiting IBM and satisfying customers.

    Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS - OPC   

     TWSzOS, also known as OPC, is IBM Tivoli's strategic computer workload scheduler and controller for z/OS, MVS, AIX/6000, OS/400 OS/2 SUN and HP-UX and other systems.

     Peter's close contacts with the development laboratory enables him to keep his knowledge and course material up to date. He has worked at the laboratory, and the laboratory employed him to train their new staff.

     Peter taught the first OPC classes held in the USA, and trained the US instructor. He is in constant demand by companies to teach classes on their sites in Britain, Europe and the middle east.

     Peter designed and wrote OPC courses which were taught by IBM throughout the world. He now has his own up-to-date course material, and continues to teach classes for IBM.

     Recently Peter was asked by a major Irish bank to audit its use of OPC after a scheduling problem seriously impacted work. He was quickly able to identify and correct the cause of the problem and produced a report pointing to a number of ways to improve usage. He also performed a health check for an American financial institution: they were so pleased brought Peter back to the USA to train their operations staff.

     e-Business and Internet Training     

     Peter was asked by Unilever plc to write and teach a course for their IT managers. The three day class provided an introduction to the internet, coding a webpage, HTML and XML and studied company specific case studies. Peter wrote a 450 page student manual and taught the class throught Europe, in South Africa and the USA.

     Recently Peter was called in at short notice to write a training book about a customised office automation suite of programs based on Lotus products for the Cabinet Office of the e-Envoy. The course was finished on time and Peter taught the classes on schedule.

     Peter produced and taught IBM (UK)s first internet and HTML classes, and several e-business courses.

     Professional & Business Experience     

     Since 1970 Peter has worked in all aspects of computer operations, first for BT, for IBM from 1989 - 2003, and subsequently as an independent contractor.

     Peter speaks at User Group meetings; he was guest speaker at the 1997 US National Info/Man Conference in Chicago, the 1997 Nordic Info/Man Conference in Oslo, Norway and the 1998 US National Info/Man Conference in Williamsburg VA. His articles are published in the official Info/Man journal The Structured Word.

In 2000 went to Austin, Texas for six weeks to write the Redbook End to End Scheduling with OPC and TWS - Mainframe & Distributed Environments. He returned to Austin in July 2003 to write training courses for the upcoming TWSzOS V8R2 .

     He has a great interest in the World Wide Web, codes HTML and maintains several Internet Web Sites, including www.pmay.com containing the latest information and hints and tips on OPC and Info/Man.

     Peter is a Member of the Institute of IT Trainers.

     His considerable knowledge and personable communications skills combine to make him a superb trainer and acknowledged subject expert.

     He volunteered for early retirement from IBM in January 2003 and is now available for short or long contracts anywhere.
