Peter May's book, Marilyn Merlot and the Naked Grape is packed with amusing and unusual wine labels and the stories behind them is available from bookshops and Amazon. He writes about for wine for several publications, presents tastings and judges at wine shows. He has a particular interest in South Africa and unusual grape varieties. He is currently writing a book about Pinotage.
He is a writer for South Africa's leading wine information and news site - www.wine.co.za and has a monthly column for New Zealands premier wine site www.wineoftheweek.co.nz.
He is wine editor for the US e-zine BriefMe, and has contributed wine travel articles for several leading websites including www.wineloverspage.com and www.wineanorak.com
Peter runs The Pinotage Club, a non-commercial fan club for the Pinotage variety, and its website at www.pinotage.org, and a popular site of unusual and amusing wine labels Unusual Wine Labels.
He doesn't just collect labels. In 2001 he proposed the name 'Classic' for a new bordeaux style blend made by South Africa's Lanzerac Winery. The wine, named Lanzerac Classic is now on sale.
Peter has extensively toured the vineyards and wineries of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Napa Valley, Santa Barbara, Temecula Valley, Texas Hill Country, Canada's Niagara Peninsula and South Africa's Cape, and has visited vineyards and wineries in several other US states and in England where he currently lives.
He studied for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust courses and gained the WSET Certificate and the WSET Higher Certificate with Distinction and was made Honorary Member of the Pinotage Association in 2004.
He was an Associate Judge at the International Wine Challenge (London) 2004 and International Judge at the South Africa National Wine Show Veritas awards (Paarl, RSA) 2004 and The ABSA/Pinotage Association Pinotage Top 10 Competition (Paarl, RSA) 2004 and 2005. He was on the WINE magazine Sauvignon Blanc tasting panel, the results of which were published in the November 2005 issue.
Peter presents regular wine tastings for The Pinotage Club, the Central London Wine Society and others on request.
