Synopsis "Accidentally on Purpose" is a musical with audience participation. It is a story about a nutty professor (Professor Accidentally) who is giving lectures to university students. The audience is the classroom/lecture hall. As part of the curriculum he shows videos (simulated) of the counselling session he has with one of his patients (Ms. Purpose).
Ms. Purpose is actually a man who likes to wear women's clothes. Besides having a penchant for cross-dressing, he's also a schizophrenic. His alter ego (Dr. Fraude) makes his first appearance as a contemporary of Professor Accidentally, to take part in a psychoanalytical session for the professor. He pops up again as a guest speaker causing relentless cross-examination in front of the students, much to his great discomfort. Later in the show we run into him once more during a hypnosis session.
Actors are planted in the audience, 3 of which represent the Ego (Rosalie Conscious), a naïve young woman interested mainly in her present surroundings, the Id (Gnat Proklivaty), a scrawny studious looking character who cherishes his instinctive impulse; the Super-Ego (Earnest Scruples) a conceited, self-opinionated and troublesome windbag of a young man. The rest of the company (approx.six) have no dialogue, however they do join in the usual classroom antics as well as perform in the songs.
Every session between the professor and Ms. Purpose is an antagonist encounter with the battle for control never subsiding. After each session finishes the professor returns to the lectern to discuss the session with the students.
In some scenes during the musical numbers the students congregate in front of the stage. However the only characters who ever actually are on stage are Professor Accidentally and Ms. Purpose/Dr. Fraude. Gnat Prokilvaty (the Id) makes his entrance into the hall late, from the back of the venue after the audience is seated, causing much disruption to the professor's lecture.
Towards the finale the professor put Ms. Purpose through hypnosis with some extremely bizarre consequences. The professor is attempting to reconcile Ms. Purpose's fragmented psyche, and while some progress is made the cure is far from complete. Ms. Purpose remains quite demented.
