SUBJECT:Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 POSTED: 20/04/02

Waffle: Righty, now the original was one of the first anime series I actually watched properly so I suppose you could say its what really got me goin. I'd seen akira, appleseed and such years ago on video and channel 4 but I'd just thought of them as good movies, it never occurred to me that there might be whole series of the things out there for my viewing pleasure. Anyhoo, enough of my babbling.

What sci-fi.com has to say: In the aftermath of the great earthquake, one ruthless corporation stands ready to take over the devastated city of Tokyo with an army of synthetic monsters. Only one small band of female mercenaries is ready to stand against the monolithic power of Genom. Armed with the most incredible combat suits ever designed, the Knight Sabers wage a desperate war in the shadows, combating the monstrous by-products of technology run amuck and even the AD Police itself with courage, sweat and blood. It's a deadly trial by fire as the acclaimed cyberpunk masterpiece is reborn in a new action-packed series!

Basic premise: in the near future labour saving androids are goin nutty all over the place and causing general mischief, the police task force assigned to handle the problem are about as much use as a chocolate tea pot so a group called the "knight sabers" appears. Privately funded they are 4 birds in armoured exosuits who basically kick the shit out of any droids that decide they don't wanna place nice with all the other 'bots. Of course there's a "big bad" to beat by the end of the 26 part series.. but then again, when isn't there?

What I liked: its ya basic anime action fair; tasty birds, a dark and convoluted past for one (or more) of the main characters, big guns, fighting robots, blah blah... music's not bad either.

SUBJECT:Tenchi Muyo (eng: No need for Tenchi) POSTED: 20/04/02

what sci-fi.com has to say: Young Tenchi is just a normal, albeit somewhat serious kid. Until of course, the inevitable happens and Tenchi awakens a 3,000-year old demon legend, who turns out to be not a demon at all, but an infamous female alien thief. A female alien thief named Ryoko. But when Tenchi's father invites Ryoko to stay, it looks like things can't be worse... that is until they're joined by Princess Ayeka, her little sister Sasami, Ryo-ohki, and a few others... all vying for Tenchi's attention, and it isn't long before the group's powers are tested against some cosmic criminals.

Waffle: Much copied but never surpassed, this is actually my fav of the whole anime crop. I guess i'm just an old romantic softy at heart.. either that or wish I was tenchi myself. ^_^ (my god, that's the 1st time iv ever used a jap style smiley!) There's a number of versions of tenchi to choose from, all of which are correct(ish).just think of it as a series of parallel universes and just pick the one you like best.

Basic premise: ordinary high school boy (tenchi) releases a demon from her cryogenic prison in his grandfathers shrine. Demon turns out to be a space pirate (ryoko) in the body of a 17yr old(ish) girl. Space pirate bird then falls for tenchi and doesn't mind showing it in a big way (did I mention she can fly, teleport and shoot fireballs from her hands?). galactic princess (aeyka), who's been hunting ryoko, turns up on earth and falls for tenchi too. Between the fighting for tenchis attention they're joined by the princesses little sister (sasami), a member of the galactic police (mihoshi) and ryokos mother (washu) who just happens to be the number one genius scientist in the universe.

What I liked: ordinary joe gets surrounded by half a dozen women who all fancy the pants off him.. what's not to like?

SUBJECT:Neon Genesis: Evangelion POSTED: 20/04/02

Waffle: Wahoo! This is the big one. This is kinda where anime hit it big. Jap animation company Gainex brought out evangelion back in the early 90s and boy did it kick it all off.. It's like the "Citizen Kane" of the anime world. Full of biblical references and existential angst in the "why am I here?" vein coupled with 100 foot robots. It helps if you know the bible but isn't a necessity.

what sci-fi.com has to say: Tokyo 3 is the last key to the survival of human race. Angels, the unknown matter that have only one will of causing catastrophic "Third Impact" has to make a contact with the Adam, the origin of every being which resides in the deep down of Tokyo 3... To prevent this from happening, Robot form called Evangelion must protect the city.

Basic premise: earth is under attack by so-called "angels", and we aint talking Gabriel here, these are bad bastards that can take out a city with just a dirty look. The humans have created the "evangelions", basically huge fighting robots that can only be piloted by a select few teenagers. Enter shinji, a scared, whiney assed little wimp who's told he's gotta pilot one of these behemoths and knock seven shades of shit outa the angels or the human race is doomed. Along the way there's a healthy dose of religious claptrap and personal angst which makes this more than ya standard mecha fest.

Wot I liked: rei, nuff said. ^_^

SUBJECT:Cowboy Bebop POSTED: 20/04/02

Waffle: love it, big thumbs up!!

Wot sci-fi.com have to say: Once upon a time, in New York City in 1941... at this club open to all comers to play, night after night, at a club named "Minston's Play House" in Harlem, they play jazz sessions competing with each other. Young jazz men with a new sense are gathering. At last they created a new genre itself. They are sick and tired of the conventional fixed style jazz. They're eager to play jazz more freely as they wish then... in 2071 in the universe... The bounty hunters, who are gathering in the spaceship "BEBOP", will play freely without fear of risky things. They must create new dreams and films by breaking traditional styles. The work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called... COWBOY BEBOP

Basic Premise: bounty hunters in space, about the gist of it there. Spike Spiegel and Jet Black are two space faring bounty hunters who along the way hook up with huntress Faye valentine and child genius hacker "radical" ed. Many targets are captured, shot or lost while dark pasts a plenty come back to haunt them all.

Wot I liked: everything. The animations great, the fight scenes are great and the characters are great. The music's pretty…er…great too.

SUBJECT:Love Hina POSTED:20/04/02

Waffle: so is it a tenchi clone or not? Personally I think not even though it follows the basic tenchi formula; young male surrounded by many, many young women, some of which are tryin to get into his pants, others of which want him gone. Usual anime fare. Still great fun though.

Basic premise: no longer supported by his parents when he fails to get into Tokyo u yet again keitaro takes a job as the live in manager of a local girls dorm (poor bastard!)

Wot I liked: the way naru keeps knockin the shit outa keitaro!! Hahah! Sucka!

what sci-fi.com has to say: Keitaro and his childhood sweetheart make a promise to be accepted at and to meet each other at the prestigous Toudai University before she moved out of his life. About a decade later, Keitaro has become an artist and a daydreamer, having ranked 27th from the last in the national practice exam. When his grandmother leaves the all-girls dormitory, he becomes the residential manager and soon meets up with two Todai applicants who may have been that sweetheart, since he's forgotten her name. Then there the other tenants like young Shinobu who was in despair until Keitaro helped her, Motoko the swordsmaster who sees men as evil distractions, Su Kaolo the genius child inventor and the sneaky Kitsune.

SUBJECT:Hand Maid May POSTED: 20/04/02

Waffle: here we go again, its yet another tenchi clone: young man surrounded by much crumpet. The question that keeps comin to mind is why al these blokes seem so miserable about their lot. Personally id be happy as a very happy thing during happy hour down at the "happy horse" public bar!!

Basic premise: Computing student accidentally comes into possession of a foot tall android maid. The company that created said maid obviously wants it back but in the mean time the maids got other ideas.

Wot I liked: its just a no brainer cutesy little comedy. Put ya brain in neutral and leave it at that.

What sci-fi.com has to say: Satome Kazuya, a student at the prestigious Osza no Mizu Industries University, was never good with girls. The cute girl who lives next door continually teases him, and he pays no mind. Instead, he's absorbed in his work, creating an Octopus robot that uses advanced artificial intelligence. One day, his boisterous rival gives him a mysterious CD-ROM that contains a virus intended to destroy his computer and ruin his work. The CD takes him instead to a website where he accidentally orders May - a 4-inch robot girl designed to help out around the house.

SUBJECT:Noir POSTED: 20/04/02

Waffle: man, talk about dark an depressing. This is the most long winded anime I have ever seen. But while it takes 26 episodes to do what could have been done in 13 I think the extra length isn't that much of a drawback. Its nice to see an anime based somewhere other than Japan as the Paris setting is really refreshing.

Basic premise: a pair of young female assassins go up against a might and ancient organization intent on takin over the world, or something like that/

Wot I liked: the music for this anime is amazing, i've got "salva nos" in my winamp playlist right now. The gun fights are excellent and extremely well planned. Also some of the best bits of this anime involve absolutely no speech whatsoever.

what sci-fi.com has to say: nothing.. surprisingly :-o

SUBJECT:Nadesico POSTED: 20/04/02

Waffle:

Basic premise: earths under attack from mysterious aliens and the battle ship "nadesico" is dispatched to go kick the stuffing outa as many of them as possible. Dragged along for the ride is ships cook akito who has a whole lot more to do with both the aliens and the captain than meets the eye.

Wot I liked: I gotta admit it, I loved ruri, the ships operations officer who seemed to spend all her time declaring that everyone else were "bakas" (idiots)

what sci-fi.com has to say: The year is 2195. The anonymous "Jovian Lizards" attack Earth and the Earth's Mars Colony. For defense, the Military turns to the Corporation Nergal which builds the advanced battleship Nadesico. Commandeering the ship is the talented, but not-so-bright female captain Yurika Misamaru. And drafted onto the ship is Akito Tenkawa who wants nothing more than being a cook but certain mysteries from his past connects him with the "Lizards" and the Mechas, and he soon becomes the ship's reluctant star Aestivalis/Mecha pilot as they go off to fight and learn the identity of the invaders from Jupiter.
