SUBJECT: Iv'e been thinking...POSTED: 13/03/03 BY: SAM

.....rare i know but it happens ;-)

anyhoo, ive been thinkin about lightning crashes which is an excellent song by a band called Live. If u havent heard it then go download it.

I was originally told that it's about a mother dyin in childbirth but i disagree. mainly due to a couple of reasons:

1*the dying is associated with an "old mother", this use of the word "old", i feel, doesnt reflect the woman who's just given birth, rather someone elses mother, or more likely grandmother.

2*the new mother is mentioned twice, with the old mother between them, this would indicate they are seperate entitys. also at the end the new mother is still waiting, she's refered to in present tense, not past.

3*the old mother is refered to in past tense in "the confusion that was hers", this would indicate shes either dead (likely) or not longer confused, and lets face it, dead people are no longer confused

in my mind, the angel is the old womans soul being transferred to the baby, her eyes close as the old woman dies whilst opening them as the baby is born. the circle being presented, whilst alluding to her iris's seem to me to be the circle of life, the enternally continuing process of death and rebirth. this is supported by the "returning" motif of the chorus.

i've made a few notes on the lyrics, mainly just my thoughts and feelings i get from the song. most are just rambles, feel free to ignore.

*****************************************

lightning crashes, a new mother cries
**i dont think the lightning is to do with the weather, more the life changing events that are taking place. the effects are so large and frightning and so wildly unpredictable that its like a storm surrounding all involved.**
**the crys are obviously labour pains.. dur**
her placenta falls to the floor
**more to signify the baby's been born than anything else, also the fact it falls indicates the labour is rushed and there's confusion all around** the angel opens her eyes
**birth, new life. is there anything else more perfect, more pure than a newborn baby?*
the confusion sets in
**if you were 30 seconds old wouldnt you be confused?**
before the doctor can even close the door
**i dont think this is a physical door, more metaphysical**

lightning crashes, an old mother dies
**one hell of a life changin event goin on here, in fact i'd say its "the" life changin event as dyin doesnt always mean death. many have returned, and those that do are nearly all are changed in some way**
**and old mother would refer to a old woman or grandmother i think**
her intentions fall to the floor
**got me there, i think it just means whatever she was holding, or workin on, falls to the floor, to remain untouched, i'll work on that**
the angel closes her eyes
**death, the final sleep, the soul moves on towards its new home...** the confusion that was hers
**...and takes its final condition with it, or is it the first conditon looped round again? death is just so confusing, but its amazing that as a species we always seem to get it right**
belongs now, to the baby down the hall
**which i feel supports my stand that the two mothers are different entitys, the old woman dies in her room, while the baby and its mother are down the hall goin thru childbirth**

oh now feel it comin' back again
**therese a def "return" motif here**
like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
**that happens all the time, right from the dawn of time**
forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
**natural, unstoppable, like gravity, it simply will not stop, ever**
I can feel it.
**i bet he does**

lightning crashes, a new mother cries
**tears of joy, exhaustion, relief, humans are such a contridiction. you could go to a hospital and watch a baby being born, watch the mothers first look at her child, the extreme emotions that rush through her, these can never be faked, never forced, no actress will ever be this good. this is something men will never, ever know, we envy you women for this**
this moment she's been waiting for
**hurried labour, confusion all around, her first child, hence "new" mother, its been a stressfull 9 months, full of fear and worry and doubt. this minute, this second is the culmination of all her efforts, all her dreams. there is nothing else in her life at this moment**
the angel opens her eyes
**human response, the child makes its first movements as a truly seperate entity, teh soul settles into place, it is now home**
pale blue colored iris,
**does this mean anything, maybe, could be completly arbitary or maybe because angels are typicly shown as blonde and blue eyed**
presents the circle
**the circle of life swings around once more, like an ourobouros, the snake swallowing its time for the rest of time**
and puts the glory out to hide, hide
**and we just dont see it do we, we kill, we maim, we hate. theres so much goin on in the world, so many miricles happening every day and we just let it pass us by. just how dumb are we?**
