Pastor Ken and the Miskin
Baptist Centre
We visited the chapel which is opposite our
school. It is a new chapel, but not a new building. It is about seven and a half years old
and it was opened by the late Jill Dando who was a family friend of the then minister, Mr.
Roger Collins.
Two of the chapels in Penrhiwceiber - Mount Piscah and Bethesda were becoming difficult to
maintain, and so it was decided to come together to make one chapel. Not everybody was in
agreement with this at first, but people soon realised that it would be for the bet.
Work began on the building which was once and old mill. All members of the
congregations helped if they were able. A group of young Christians came over from America
to help too.
There is also a block of sheltered housing accommodation connected to the chapel. This is
on the main road in Penrhiwceiber and the building used to be a pub.
The chapel offers a great deal for the young people in the community and there is a large
Sunday school class. It appears that more and more young people are returning to church or
chapel these days to learn about their history from the Bible.
From speaking to some of the older members of the community it appears that attitudes are
changing towards religion and people to day go to church through choice and not because
they are forced to do so.
