THE WISHING TREE
CARNIVAL OF SOULS
DORIAN MUSIC DM WT 001
8

The Wishing Tree is the brainchild of Marillion guitarist Steve Rothery. Joining him for this debut album are fellow Marillion member Pete Trewavas, Enchant drummer Paul Craddick and the previously unknown singer Hannah Stobart. Rather than going for a typical self indulgent instrumental workout Rothery has shown commendable restraint, The Wishing Tree are more of a band than any one persons solo project, if anything it's Hannah who is the star of this show. While tracks like the opening "Evergreen" have many similarities to Marillion the majority of the material has a sparcer, less pompous/progressive approach. Comparisons to All About Eve, The Violet Hour, Kate Bush and Mai Britt Normann are more accurate with many a folky influence coming through, not least in the purity of Hannah's vocals . Tracks like "Nightwater" and "Empire Of Lies" are rockier than expected and greatly add to the albums diversity. "Midnight Snow" even takes a diversion into blues. Rothery's guitar work is as classy as ever, again proving his brilliance but also shows off more diverse aspects of his talents as well. An excellent record, and one not just for Marillion fans.

SOVORY

POLYDOR 31452 7751 2

At times this is a really great record, the opening track "Soul" is great funk tinged rock ala Seal meets Dan Reed Network. Other tracks have hints of Distance/Robert Hart. "Love Is Still Enough" is a laid back soulful ballad that reminds me of One Nation. Sovory himself has a fine voice, very expressive and emotional with none of those fake soul wobbles that everyone does these days. "You Sleep, I Cry" is an excellent mix of Seal atmospheres meets Marc Jordan style AOR. "Midnight Sun" has a bizarre sound, taking the close harmonies of Venice and matching them with Jean Beauvoir style lead vocals. Still, a great groove and stabbing guitars make this a highlight. "Time" and the haunting "Sky" are like an acoustic Seal. If you like Seal and Dan Reed this album is well worth looking out for.

Dalbello - "Whore"

DALBELLO
WHORE
EMI CANADA 7243 8 37985 2 0
10

It's 9 years since Lisa Dalbello's classic 'She' was released, with only the odd session appearance and songwriting credit (Heart) to keep her fans going. Now at last there is a new album to get our teeth into. Like 'She' and her other essential album 'WhoManFourSays' 'Whore's rewards come after many plays, revealing something new each time. Easy listening this ain't. Sonically it's less polished and 'commercial' than 'She' being closer in spirit to 'WMFS' but with a bigger and more powerful production (many of the late Mick Ronson's accidental techniques are used again, ie distorting and processed vocals). As a whole it sounds very contemporary but without sacrificing or compromising Dalbello's unique style. If anything 'Whore' is her most extreme album to date. Randy Cooke's massive Bonham-esque drumming lends a tight but loose groove to the set, while the guitars of Tim Welch, Kevin Breit, Justin Clayton and Dalbello herself are plain brutal. 'Heavy Boots' is driven by a pounding beat and funky bass lines. 'Whore' itself is Dalbello at her psychotic weirdest with much of the lyric spoken. 'Deep Dark Hole' is dominated by booming bass, some great clavinet and more excellent drum work. 'Yippie' is just as uncompromising and one of the album's standouts. Another is the brilliant 'All That I Want', great processed vocals and dynamics, with more imagination in its 5 minutes than most bands manage in 45. A few songs have more prominent traces of the 'She' era, 'Falling Down' is a relatively gentler piece with lots of atmospheric vocals and 'Eleven's melody is there behind a dark brooding arrangement. 'O Lil Boy' has strong Indian influences and 'Sleeping Beauty's Revenge' has a very Kashmir-ian sound and a guest appearance from Tommy Lee. After so long away from the scene Dalbello could have been forgiven for coming back with a less than perfect record, but to re-emerge with such a stunning set is some achievement indeed. Essential.

Thread - "Thread"

THREAD
THREAD
LAUGHING GULL PHD8-96

Vince DiCola is a busy man, as if the recently released Storming Heaven wasn't enough here's another of his projects, Thread. Joining DiCola this time are fellow founder member Doane Perry (Jethro Tull's drummer) and Tower Of Power vocalist Ellis Hall (a few guests provide guitars and Storming Heaven's Rick Livingstone adds some vocals). Thread are more progressive in direction than SH but have enough sense to inject plenty of melodic hooks, making for a Kansas, Dream Theater, Touch, Toto hybrid. The main focus in Thread are DiCola's keyboards which are simply stunning, ever inventive they are even used to sound like bass and guitars. Imagine someone like Keith Emerson or Rick Wakeman with AOR songwriting sensibilities - DiCola is that man. 'Hands Of Kindness' is a brilliant number (sadly edited to less than half its original length), and along with the magnum opus 'Rainbow Suite' gives you the very essence of what Thread are about (top hooks to keep your attention and virtuoso musicianship to leave you dumbstruck). Perry also shows his worth on 'Rainbow Suite' with a phenomenal performance that recalls Tull at their best. 'Another Mean Day' boasts the sort of keyboard solo Mark Mangold used to surpass at. 'Just Out Of Reach' sounds like a Dream Theater ballad only better. 'Rage' proves that Thread can cut it with heavier material as well, great riffs from former Billionaires Boys Club singer Mark Boals (also vocalist with an earlier incarnation of Thread) add the necessary weight. 'Secrets Of The Game' highlights Hall's vocals, with lots of Chicago/Toto-esque harmonies as has 'Live At The Scene' which also contains a mighty Rabin-esque solo. Whether you like AOR or Prog you are certain to find something to your taste here. Thoroughly recommended.

Donna Lewis - "Now In A Minute"

DONNA LEWIS
NOW IN A MINUTE
ATLANTIC 7567-82762-2

Ignored by British record companies Welsh singer Donna Lewis went to the States got a deal and had a #2 hit with the Tori meets Enya-esque 'I Love You Always Forever' (the "Philly Remix" is great as well). The rest of the record is just as good but also reveals a few more AOR friendly leanings. There's a definite 80s feeling to the album but without being dated. 'Love & Affection' for example has a breathy Kim Carnes-like quality, while I guess you could compare 'Without Love' to a leftfield T'Pau in places. 'Agenais' has vocal similarities to Leigh Mattey while the more upbeat 'Fools Paradise' is very like Romeo's Daughter in approach. A great new talent.

Leah Andreone - "Veiled"

LEAH ANDREONE

It seems like every major label is now looking for their Alanis Morissette, just like they all looked for their Guns 'n Roses, Nirvana etc (and basically anyone else who makes it big) a few years ago. Of course none of the 'clones' will make the leap to mega sales, but that's how major labels act, we all know that. So, is Leah Andreone another Alanis style harridan or a genuine talent? Well, only time will tell but her debut album at least boasts some great songs to be going on with. 'It's Alright, It's OK' is a strong catchy opener, 'Happy Birthday' evokes a heavier Heather Nova, 'Mother Tongue' has a great groove and wonderful vocal performance from Leah (part Alanis, part Tori part Kerri Anderson). 'Who Are They To Say' has some well placed horns and fine hook. 'Problem Child' is a fine song although its overt angst will not endear it to Alanis weary cynics. 'Come Sunday Morning' has a melody that makes me think of a 90s Bangles! 'Will You Still Love Me' takes tops honours for its brilliant hook alone. Producer Rick Neigher (Alias) provides a great foil for Leah to spark off, giving the songs a strong backing of melody and structure. All in all a very strong debut.

GRASS SHOW
SOMETHING SMELLS GOOD IN STINKVILLE
EMI SVENSKA 7243 8 37759 2 7
6

I expected this to be average power pop, not usually my cup of tea I know, but having been intrigued by one track I thought I might as well give it a go. The first track 'Freak Show' comes on like Adam Schmitt at his melodically intense best. '1962' continues with riffs blasting out but gives the first hint of something deeper, with the quirky pop rock nuances of Big Money coming through. 'Out Of The Void' further develops this slant adding a bit of Honeycrack to the mix. 'Unreal World' is the sort of moody laid back number that Scandinavian bands do so well, and empahasises the smooth vocals of Peter Agren. 'Cavemankind' takes a shot at Terrorvision pop rock with great riffs from Erik Kinell. 'All That She Wants' is a cover of the Ace Of Base "classic" which ends up sounding more like the Ramones! 'Make Love Not War' is quirkiness personified, a 'Spirit In The Sky' kind of groove meets a jazz swing with bits of The Beatles, make for quite a memorable number. Grass Show are a welcome new addition to the Scandinavian scene.

TRINE REIN
BENEATH MY SKIN
EMI-MEDLEY DENMARK 8382342
7

After a promising debut Trine Rein returns with an even better follow up. Laid back pop-rock is what's on offer, with Tone Norum, Tina Arena (on the more upbeat songs), Mariah Carey and Celine Dion (on the more soulful ones) all coming to mind. Great vocals go without saying. Too poppy for some no doubt but good stuff all the same.

ALEX CAPLIN
FLY TO THE BRILLIANT SKY
FRE/EMI CANADA 50114-2
6

The second album from Alex Caplin is a more organic affair than his Hi Tech eponymous debut. The Keven Jordan references are still valid though, but more guitar is present this time making it more singer-songwritery. 'Down The Track' (great solo) and 'The Waiting Man' (nice ambient loops) stand out. A respectable return, but I still prefer the debut.

DEE CARSTENSEN
REGARDING THE SOUL
EXIT NINE/POLYGRAM 120252
7

Dee Carstensen's second album is fine laid back AOR which comes across like Tina Arena meets Marc Jordan. With co-writes from Glen Burtnik and Bob Marlette this oozes class. Beautifully pure vocals are the highlight, ideal late night fare in fact. Her still available debut 'Beloved One' is even better though.

MUDGIRL
FIRST BOOK
PERMANENT RECORDS 77521 10402

This debut EP promises much for the future. A power packed sound that owes more to the alternative scene is topped off with Kim Bingham's superb Debbie Harry-ish style vocals. Raw and heavy, but with tons of melody, tracks like 'This Day' and 'Sauteed Onions' are instantly memorable in a manner not dissimilar to say, Adam Schmitt. Well worth tracking down.

KEVIN CONNELLY
SON OF THE SUN
NEWLIFE/MAGADA MAGCD-68

New Regime vocalist Kevin Connelly returns with his debut solo album, gone is the Hi Tech AOR of old to be replaced by a rootsier sound. Tom Cochrane is the nearest musical reference and Cochrane's guitarist Bill Bell plays throughout. Connelly's vocals are as good as ever, (imagine a cross between Kyf Brewer and ABC's Martin Fry singing rock). Not everything hits home though, but a welcome return even so.

Musically we are in real Kate Bush/Tori Amos territory here with a few hints of Donna Lewis creeping in occasionally as well. The quirky piano led rock is very well executed but Carolyn's vocal warbles go a bit OTT at times which tends to spoil an otherwise very enjoyable set. Worth a listen though.

SANNA
QUESTIONS
RIVAL/BMG 74321 36902 2, SWEDEN
7

Upbeat pop rock with strong female vocals, but not too similar to Alanis, (well maybe a bit on 'Little Girl' ) is what you will find on Sanna's debut. 'Where Are You' is brilliant a great hooky song with one superb solo at the end. 'Let Your Love Shine' is a mellow-then-frantic blast of Scando Cranberries.

SARA ISAKSSON
WALKING THROUGH AND BY
MCA MCD 87052, SWEDEN
5

Sara's debut 'Red Eden' was excellent, this follow up lacks its sparkle and is something of a disappointment as a result. A few tracks ('Another Smile') catch hold but nothing matches what Sara has done before. Mostly the material is too introspective, upbeat numbers are few and far between, which just makes a chore of the whole listening experience.

TARA MACLEAN
SILENCE
NETTWERK/MCA 0 6700 30106 2 7, CANADA

From the same label as Sarah McLachlan comes the similar sounding Tara MacLean who is a little less folky and ethereal. Lots of great rhythmic drumming underlays the mellow soundscapes where McLachlan and Kerri Anderson style melodies neatly gell. A very good debut.

JOHN BOTTOMLEY
BLACKBERRY
BMG CANADA 74321-25264-2
7

John Bottomley's major label debut should find an appreciative home in the collection of any Gowan fan. Their vocals are incredibly alike as 'The River' makes immediately apparent. The music is much in the vein of Larry's recent, rootsier work, acoustics to the fore, with a few bluesier angles explored. All making for a highly satisfying Gowan-Tom Cochrane hybrid.

MARIE FREDRIKSSON
I EN TID SOM VÅR
EMI SVENSKA 7243 8 53708 2 3, SWEDEN
7

Marie's 5th solo album is her best in years and probably her best ever. Less overtly poppy than Roxette the self penned songs are sophisticated slices of adult rock-pop-soul. Marie may sing everything in Swedish but with a voice as beautiful as hers it's not a problem. The title track is as near damn it a classic Roxette ballad, 'Drömmen' has a nice dancy groove as does the more laid back 'Efter Så Många År'. 'Min Trognaste Vän' is a classy midpaced number with good guitar work. 'Mild Varm Vår' is an excellent melodramatic piece with lots of strings and keyboards making for a big orchestrated sound. All things considered it does make you wonder why Marie doesn't have a bigger hand in the writing of Roxette's own material. Surely they don't need 12 singles on every album? For anyone already into Roxette this is well worth searching for.

Oceansize

OCEANSIZE
WHAT TURNS YOU ON?
INDEPENDENT CASSETTE
8

With their second album length tape Oxford's Oceansize deliver another 13 examples of power pop at its very best. Constantly evolving, their songwriting just gets better and better. Tracks like 'Blow My Mind', 'Circus' and 'Superstar' show off the trio's growing self identity, sounding like no one else but Oceansize. From the expected straightforward power pop of 'Sicily', 'Parasite' and 'Pressure' to the subtle Floyd meets Radiohead atmospherics of 'Saturn Night' (awesome middle eight) the song craft has been honed to near perfection. Then they go and totally throw you with the sublime melody of 'Ten Feet Tall' (complete with Donnie Iris style hand claps!) which is like mid period U2 with better pop sensibilities. As if that wasn't enough 'Dream' is a stunning mix of melodic power and Roy Orbison groove! 'Lunatic Soup' is driven by Rich Elson's powerful feedbacking guitar work, Rich comes into his own on the brooding title track where he lets fly with some mesmerizing work on the run out. 'Blue Sky Black' boasts a great hook and lots of powerful chiming guitar. 'Conscience Calls' ends the album with a U2 meets REM twist, and another amazingly melodic solo. When they come to compile their first proper album the biggest problem will be deciding which tracks to pass over, and that's not even considering the unrecorded new songs which, from their live airings, promise to be even better. Oceansize are on a roll and 1997 should see them gathering the momentum to begin breaking through to bigger and better things. The best unsigned band in the UK - but surely not for much longer. The tape is available for £5.00 cheques/orders made payable to: D.A. Reiber-Hodgson.

ANN DEE & PIA KAY
WOMAN INSIDE
OY DECIMA AB DECI RECORDS DECI003
4

At their best this Finnish duo appear to be attempting a Trine Rein/Tina Arena meets early Time Gallery crossover, with the odd hint of Animotion/Tami Show here and there. 'Woman Inside Of Me' and 'What's Wrong, What's Right' are probably the best attempts at this, and some of the ballads are OK as well. Where they really make a mistake is on the more upbeat, dance numbers, which come across as very hamfisted. Trine Rein did much better dancy stuff on her debut. The girls' voices are nice enough but they really need to get some better songs, work with a more sympathetic producer next time and decide if they really want to be an AOR or pop act.

This alternativey pop-rock with male/female twin lead vocals from Canadians Booming Airplanes has its moments, the catchiness of 'Silver Lining' and 'You And Betty' for example, but overall its appeal to Frontiers readers will be pretty limited.
