What is a Ufo? Updated: 6/9/97
UFO stands for Unidentified Flying Object. They are not necessarialy extra terrestrial in origin, but some are. They may simply be meteor from space entering and burning up in earth's atmosphere, but there is also evidence that there are extra-terestrial craft under intelligent control flying through earth's airspace.

What objects are mistaken for Ufo's? Updated: 30/8/97
Only around 5-10% of reported UFO sightings cannot be explained. Probably the most common explatation for a UFO sighting is that it was a plane viewed from a strange angle, or with the sun reflecting off of one in a dark sky, giving the impression of a much larger object. Other explanations include planets such as Venus which appear bright in the morning and evening sky or even a cloud formation ''Lenticular clouds'.

When was the first Ufo sighting? Updated: 30/8/97
Modern sightings started in the late nineteenth century, but there is also evidence of 'flying saucers' visiting earth a few thousand years ago. Most of the sighting in the late 1800's were probably lighter-than-air craft such as the German Zeppelin airship designed by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. The sighting that started the modern series of sightings was made by Kenneth Arnold, an experienced pilot on 24th June 1947. He saw 9 objects flying in formation over the Cascade Mountains (WA, USA), and estimated there speed as over 1000mph, which is much faster than known aircraft at that time. Arnold had described them as cresent shaped, and that 'they flew like a saucer would if you skipped it across the water', but the media changed this and the phrase 'flying saucer' was born.
