December 1999

A word from Dave!

The next contest will take place on Saturday 11 December.  The NOAA 14 pass
at 15:33.  I'm looking for a black and white infrared image only.  The
closing date will be Monday 13 December midnight.  Scoring will be:  10
points length of image inside any noise, 10 points longest pass and 10
points overall quality.

Running in parallel, and you can start right now, is "the best image you
ever got"  This could be from NOAA 6 on tape and replayed with modern
software, or whatever you like.  I need details of the antenna system only.
Can be in colour or whatever you want.  Scoring will be:  10 points "wow"
and or "cool" factor, 10 points length of image, 10 points length of noise
free data, and 10 points for land or interesting detail.

Guys, please remember my scoring, as always, is inspired by Clive Anderson's
Who's Line Is It Anyway".  The object is not to win, but to exchange images
and talk about them and improve your system.

Images should be send to NOAA2000@Time-step.com

Judging will take place within the week, and a final winner of all the
contests for this, the  first 40 years of NOAA, will get a prize which is
either a years subscription to Short Wave Magazine or a Paul Hayes QFH, your
choice !

So guys, it's your call !

Regards

Dave

This page will hopefully show impartial comparisons between various images taken in the UK, from the same Noaa14 pass at 15:33 UTC 11th December 1999 using as many different systems as possible.

Because of the low light levels at this time of the year all images submitted will be Infrared

Please allow for local conditions i.e expected minimum elevations due to natural and man-made obstructions, also consider whether the aerials where directed, or more than one aerial was used via switching, also consider before making any decisions that most people would prefer to leave their systems to run on auto, and if a tracking system is deemed necessary for APT, then if so you may find HRPT within your reach.

All images are resized and compressed equally, no image will be bigger than 150 k after I have processed them!

The images are in random order
