Virtual Weather Station Help

Web 2

Build web 2

ambient - your on-line weather superstore!
Build web 1

Use VWS Weather website builder to create templates  for daily.htm, details.htm and wx.htm.
Set VWS to parse (add the data to the parsing tags) and display results in .htm file

Build web 2 Use the wx.htx file created in Web 1 adding internal and external links,  parsing and viewing the wx.htm, I will be using Microsoft FrontPage to edit the wx.htx file.
Build web 3 Add META Tags to your web pages for search engines to index. Upload your Web Pages/Files using VWS in built "FTP Upload" and FTP Login.

  • Continued from Web Build 1

  • To open your wx.htx file you will need web editing software, you can use notepad but all you will see is the HTML coding which is ok for those with with HTML experience

  • TIP: if you do use notepad and want to see it in your Internet Browser save the file with a .htm suffix.

  • TIP: add a shortcut to notepad in your Right Click "Send To" menu then any files that include text you can quickly open them, if the files are bigger than 32kb they will then open in wordpad.

  •  As mentioned in Build web 1 I will be using Microsoft FrontPage, their are other web editors available some very good and FREE. try Arachnophilia a great web editing program by: Paul Lutus.

  • Click Here to see what the wx.htx file should look like

  • If yours looks like that then all is well :) that is the default wx.htx file including 3 default jpeg images, Broadcast (broadcast.jpg), Out Temp (vws742.jpg) and Barometric Pressure (vws743.jpg) Note that the latter is Station Barometer pressure you may prefer Sea Level in your display (vws758.jpg) CLICK HERE for notes on Setting Barometer.

  • As mentioned earlier the vws jpegs are not parsed only the the data file tags but any vws jpeg's that you want to display on your web site do need to be active on your desktop display otherwise they will not be updated, for example:
This is a vws jpeg (vws1157.jpg)

If this jpeg was not active on my vws desktop display it would never be updated and always show the same moon phase

  • Not only do you need to have the vws jpeg's active you will need to schedule for them to be uploaded to your web space. CLICK HERE for a example of update schedule, to set your schedule time use the calendar icon shown in this example all mine are set for 1 hour.

  • Note this example is the one I use. Yours will differ depending on which vws jpeg images you use in your display, Note also that I have my .htm files (web pages) in this scheduler rather than the one shown in the Web Site Builder Settings only the web pages that are using parsing file tags and have been parsed  are in this scheduler.

  • If you are getting confused please refer back to previous page Web1

  • Check your jpeg settings (CLICK HERE for example) and update timer, from VWS "Settings" menu then "Jpeg File settings" best to leave Image Quality at the default 80%, the update time is for updating the vws jpeg's  stored by default in your vws\jpeg folder (not for updating to your web space) you can have this set from 1 minute to 24 hour or never, lets say you have your web space set to update every 10 minutes then you could set jpeg update to 10 minutes the thing to consider is every time they update they are using your PC resources and in some cases when multitasking heavily may cause the odd stutter.

Editing wx.htx

  • Ok most of the preparations are complete. We are almost ready to edit the wx.htx.

  • Just a few notes before we begin.

  • Your wx.htx file is located by default in your C:\vws\template folder take a peek in that folder and notice the 3 default jpegs are also in that folder i.e broadcast.jpg, vws742.jpg and vws743.jpg CLICK HERE for a reminder.

  • Note the Title, Date and Time on the broadcast.jpg obviously it's not the same Broadcast showing on your vws desktop display that's ok :) the link to that jpeg is what we are concerned with we want it to show the broadcast.jpg that will be uploaded from your web upload schedule remember all the jpeg's from your vws desktop display are saved into your C:\vws\jpeg folder then uploaded from there to your web space.

  • To save any problems later when we have parsed the wx.htx file and we check the wx.htm file in our web Browsers, check your C:\vws\jpeg folder see if the 3 default jpegs are in there if not copy and paste them into that folder otherwise when viewed in Browser you will see little red crosses where the jpeg's should be.

Objectives

  •  Objective 1: Open wx.htx file in Microsoft FrontPage, split a cell, add Hourly Rain and parsing tag ^vxv123^
  • Objective 2: Change the Station Barometer  to Sea Level Barometer (vws758.jpg)
  • Objective 3: Add the following external link:

Find the Weather for any City, State or Zipcode, or Country

Objective 1 Open wx.htx file in Microsoft FrontPage, split a cell, add Hourly Rain and parsing tag ^vxv123^

  • Using your wx.htm template left click and drag over Heat Index and ^vxv21^°F so that both cells are highlighted
Wind Direction ^vxv001^°
Heat Index ^vxv021^ °F
Rainfall for Today ^vxv121^ in
Total Rainfall ^vxv009^in
  • Then right click,  from menu select Split Cells from the dialog box select Split into rows
  • You should now have 2 empty cells between Heat Index/^vwv021^°F and Rainfall for Today/^vwv121^in
Wind Direction ^vxv001^°
Heat Index ^vxv021^ °F

Rainfall for Today ^vxv121^ in
Total Rainfall ^vxv009^in
  • Just type in the empty cells Hourly Rain and the appropriate parsing tag ^vwv023^
Wind Direction ^vxv001^°
Heat Index ^vxv021^ °F
Hourly Rain ^vxv023^in
Rainfall for Today ^vxv121^ in
Total Rainfall ^vxv009^in

Objective 2 Change the Station Barometer  to Sea Level Barometer (vws758.jpg)

  • Firstly ensure you have SL Barometer graph active in your vws Display Selections. From VWS menu go to "Modify Display" then "Graph" (Ctrl+Shift+R) Click Here for example Graph Parameters.
  • Ensure you have a copy of your SL barometer jpeg in your C:\vws\template folder. Place a copy in C:\vws\jpeg folder in preparations for when you view the parsed wx.htm
  • Using the  wx.htx template in FrontPage, right click on graph then select "Picture Properties" (Alt+Enter) at the top where it says "Picture source". Type in the name of the required jpeg (vws758.jpg). You can also browse for it.
  • Note graph on right also has Temperature on second Plot. This can be obtained by right clicking on your Display graph then selecting Second Plot.
  • The jpeg file name for this graph is: vws758.jpg

Objective 3 Add the following external link

Find the Weather for any City, State or Zipcode, or Country
  • Click Here for completed wx.htm
  • Using wx.htx in FrontPage left click your cursor at the end of:
  • Current Local Weather Conditions
[Select Refresh to Update]<---left click mouse here
  • Now hit "ENTER" to give a paragraph break.
  • Now center justify so the cursor is flashing below [Select Refresh to Update]
  • Go to Table menu (Alt+T) Insert > Table, or better still use the Insert Table Icon and click a 1 by 1 table.

  • Now you should have a 1 row Table surrounded by dotted lines. Place your mouse in the table, then right click, then select "Table Properties"
  • Note in this example I have set Alignment Center. Specify width 60%, Border Size 4, Border Background color Gray.
  • Ok now for the good bit :)
  • Left click in your new table so the cursor is flashing. Now go to "Insert" Menu, then "Advanced", now "HTML" in the box that opens up. Copy and paste the following.
  • <form target="weather"
    action=http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast><font color=#000000>Find the Weather for any <b>City</b>, <b>State</b> or
    <b>Zipcode</b>, or <b>Country</b></font><br><font color=#000000><input type=text name=query size=33><input type=submit
    value="Fast Forecast">

  • Now whilst in FrontPage at the bottom select "Preview".
  • If your are not already online and you use DUN (Dial-up-Networking) it should now attempt to connect you to the internet, once connected you should see the "Fast Forecast" menu. (More on DUN in Build web 3)
  • If you want to view all the HTML code select "HTML"
  • Ok that's it :) all you need to do now is parse the wx.htx to give you the completed wx.htm file. CLICK HERE to remind you about parsing (vws menu "Internet" then "HTML Settings")
  • CLICK HERE to view my wx.htm web page. Slightly different from the sample we have been using but it illustrates the points we have covered.

TIP: Treat people the way you would like to be treated then maybe the world will be a better place

Thanks for all your patience

Sincere Regards Paul Hayes
