Virtual Weather Station Help

Web 3

Build web 3

ambient - your on-line weather superstore!
Build web 1

Use VWS Weather website builder to create templates  for daily.htm, details.htm and wx.htm.
Set VWS to parse (add the data to the parsing tags) and display results in .htm file

Build web 2 Use the wx.htx file created in Web 1 adding internal and external links,  parsing and viewing the wx.htm, I will be using Microsoft FrontPage to edit the wx.htx file.
Build web 3 Add META Tags to your web pages for search engines to index. Upload your Web Pages/Files using VWS in built "FTP Upload" and FTP Login.

Now you have successfully completed your web pages you will be eager to upload them to your web space and ensure they are indexed by all the search engines.
Most search engines rely on web crawlers to search the web indexing web sites for content.
To ensure your sites are indexed efficiently you can use META tags placed between your <Head> and </Head> tags.
To view the META tags on this page right click on this page (not on a image) then from menu that pops up select "View Source" this page should then open in Notepad showing all the HTML code, scroll to the top just below <head> you should see the META tags.
Try Submit Corner for FREE META Toolshop. Toolshop includes: META tag generator, Submit Engine, Link Popularity Tracker and more!

Note: Lets say you wanted to edit the details.htm web page to add your Location and Elevation etc, CLICK HERE to see my details.htm.
Because this page requires parsing to add data to the parsing tags, all your editing should be done on the details.htx file not details.htm.
Think of the .htx files as templates that will be parsed and automatically create/update your .htm pages. CLICK HERE for example.
(VWS menu "Internet" then "HTML Settings")

Uploading

Note: It is assumed at this point:

(a) That you have web space available. See Web build 1
(b) You  have the following information from your Web Space Service Provider: Server name, User Name, Password.
For example the Freeserve server name for uploading to web space is "uploads.webspace.freeserve.net"
If you are not sure what yours is then go to your Web Space Service Provider and look for relevant information
If you are using Web Space provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) some insist that you can only upload to there Web Space whilst you are connected to the Net with them.

In this example we will set "FTP Upload (Send)" to upload every hour the following files, (you may want your, web pages updating more regular) daily.htm, details.htm, wx.htm and the 3 jpegs.
broadcast.jpg, Out Temp (vws742.jpg) and SL Barometer (vws758.jpg), to be displayed in wx.htm.
Note more recent versions of Virtual Weather Station have a option to "FTP upload Folder (Send)" go to Menu "Internet" select FTP Upload Folder (send)
This option will upload all the contents of the selected folder.
By default VWS saves all jpegs to the vws\jpeg folder, if you use this option ensure your also save your *.htm files in the same folder then they can all be uploaded together.
FTP upload Folder (Send)
From VWS, go to Menu "Internet" then select "FTP Upload (Send)"
On the left add the files you want uploading, note you have a option to browse for each one, remember the jpegs and *.htm files should be in your c:\vws\jpeg folder.
The right side should point to your web space, in most cases it will be the web space root directory which would be a forward slash as in this example.
On the right panel click Browse, this should open your FTP login server.
Type in your Server Name, User Name and Password.
Click ok.

If you are using Dial-Up-Networking (DUN) it should now attempt to dial out using your default connection.
Note: Set your DUN to "Always dial my default connection" in Windows ME go to "Start" then "Settings" then select Dial-up Networking,  right click on your default connection then select properties then Dialing from Tab at top of menu.
From memory I think earlier versions of Windows the Dial-up Networking menu can be reached from "My Computer" and also "Start" then  "Control Panel"
Default connection
Now click on Calendar Icon and set the timer to 1 Hour do this for each item in "FTP Upload (Send) menu.
Before you close the FTP Upload (send) menu Click "Upload Now" this is just a final test to check that all the selected files are uploaded, if all goes well then the process will be automatic and your web pages should be updated at the interval you set in the schedule.
Click Here to see Schedule example

Now for the exciting part :) go online and check your web pages in your Browser

NOTE: If you don't include a particular page when typing a URL in your Browser the browser will automatically expect a Index page for example: If I typed www.phqfh.co.uk it would go directly to my index.htm or index.html (See list on right) page, if I did not have a page called index it would either show a list of files on my web space or show Page Not Found.
If I wanted to go directly to my wx.htm page then I would type www.phqfh.co.uk/wx.htm
Note that the slash used in URL's (web addresses) is forward slash.
So why not make a index page? with links to all your pages :)

Another upload facility available with VWS is "FTP Login" go to VWS Menu "Internet" then "FTP Login.
Click the "Login" button wait for it to connect to your web space it should then list all the files on your web.
Using this menu you can upload by clicking "Put File" button then browsing for the files you want to upload.
NOTE: Windows has a nasty habit of occasionally re-setting your DUN settings to "Never Dial a connection"
If you find you are getting socket errors check your DUN settings before you check anything else.

If you are using a firewall remember to authorize it to allow vws through.

If you fancy your own Domain Name, this is the company I use

THE END! I think :)

Well almost the end :) don't forget to check out the VWS Manual
