The M Pack

The M Pack explores the ways in which the design of the English/International card pack which has been developing for over 5 centuries may continue to develop over the next 5 centuries.

The SUITs

The Suit shapes are established icons and
are unchanged.
Their colours date back to the 15th century when France took over from Germany as the card printers of Europe by simplifying design and devising the equivalent of mass production.
With modern techniques there is no need for this and in the M Pack the Suits(which used to be known as 'Colours') are each given a unique colour
.

KING  QUEEN  JACK When cards were introduced to England in the 15th century most known countries were headed by a Monarch.

Today this is no longer true so the personnel of the four Suits have been replaced by their modem stereotypes.
K ) When a coup d'etat takes place in a country the Leader is usually drawn from the middle officer ranks of the Army.
Q ) As the age of Aquarius dawns the World consults with renewed vigour the Seeresses who relate its futures through
mystic means.
J ) The Jack, as Jack-of-all-trades, is represented by the archetypal Working Man.
MAJOR  MEDIUM  MINER

Polarity

For the traditionalist who resents the loss of the halving of the pack into red and black we offer an even more meaningless subdivision.
In a conventional Pack between 19 & 22 cards are asymmetrical and differ in image if turned upside down.
In the
M Pack 26 of the cards are identical when reversed and 26 are not. This has no relevance whatsoever for card games but may be welcomed by prestidigitators and phenomenologists.

1     The ACE     1
The Ace is an ambiguous card, at the same time the highest and the lowest in the Pack.
The reason that it achieved prominence in England dates from 1712 when the Government selected the Ace of Spades as the card to be stamped with the duty to be paid. This law lasted for 150 years and the tax for 100 years after that but even after the Ace ceased to be used its special design continued to be employed for the imprint of the makers name.
(In the M Pack, the Medium of Diamonds is assigned)
1    The ONE    1

The Joker

The image of the Joker was taken from the Fool or 'Numberless Card' of the Tarot Pack.
The U.S.A. adopted Jokers in the middle of the l9th Century and they began to appear regularly in Britain around 1890. The Joker is worth nothing in himself but may represent any card in the Pack This strength is possibly the reason why the Joker is being used less and less in modem card games.
The
M Pack includes 4 '0' cards each coloured as one of the suits. These may be used as less powerful Jokers which can represent any card only in its own suit. Or they may be used as conventional Jokers.
Or you may do what most players do and throw them away.
