ª  SPADES Assyria: The continuing migration of different nations, the frequent transition of power from one centre to another lent uncertainty to the nature of Mesopotamia for about 1000 years, at the end of which time the Assyrian nation, until then a subject people, rose to power, overcame opposition and held sway successively in Asur, Nimrud, Nineveh and again in Babylon, until the downfall of the Assyrian Empire in 539 BC.

©  HEARTS Persia: From this date forward, Mesopotamia ceased to be a separate entity, being incorporated by the already powerful Persian Empire. The territories of the Persian Empire extended from the Mediterranean to the Indus and were ruled over by the Achae-menid, the Arsacid and finally the Sassanian dynasties, the last of which gave way around 642 to 651 AD.

With this finishes the first great cycle of civilised history, the cycle of primitive empires, largely based upon agriculture, and governed by the high priest in a theocratic role.
