Here's the beginnings of our directory of
record shops. Every shop detailed here has been visited by one of us, but
we want to build it up into a nation-wide list, so if your favourite shop
isn't mentioned, send us an
email with a brief
description, the address, and any other details you can muster (phone number,
prices, opening hours etc.). Over the next few weeks we'll re-visit all the
shops here, update the descriptions and check the details, but forgive us
if we've made any mistakes. Where a town only has a few shops, we've included
all the stores we know about, but where there's more of a choice we've just
covered our favourites and the specialist stores. Our faves are in red and
asterisked.
See the links page for online mail-order stores.
Other record shop directories are included under the appropriate town.
Motion is another good
country-wide guide.

*Heaven Sent Records (90 Haydon Place, 01483
537078)
Small but well stocked cds and vinyl. Has more of an indie feel than some,
and sells both the well known and the weirder stuff. No decks but the assistants
are friendly and will play you your records, and also pick things out for
you. Very good bigbeat / breakbeat section. Cheap too (£4 - £6
for singles). One i'd definitely recommend.
Dance 2 Records (9-10 Woodbridge Rd, 01483 451002)
In the style of the london shops, i.e. all the new records are held behind
the counter, but you can go through and pick them out. Generally caters for
the house / commercial trance end. A bit impersonal and too full, but has
the new releases. Expensive: £5 to £8 for simgles. 4 decks to listen
on.
Sound Barrier (20-21 The Friary, 01483 300947)
Cd only. Generally commercial but has a few interesting ones.
HMV (75-79 The Friary Centre, 01483 565650)
One of the better HMVs for dance music, this place has a lot of the new hits
and also an interesting techno section if you can be bothered to look through
it all. The guys who work there generally help though. Two decks but be prepared
to queue.

Big store, with several decks. Usual stuff, but unusually good dance section
