A Family Date at Wembley
For Matlock's Wembley appearance
in 1975, Deric recalled that day with great pride: 'It was a great occasion,'
he declared. 'I went down with my wife and two kids. I remember when we got
to London, I had to pay a call in some conveniences in Leicester Square. There
were Derbyshire accents everywhere and practically evey booth was filled by
a man from Matlock!
'There was one young man - who had
never ventured further south than Derby - trying to cross the road. Despite
his best efforts, he just couldn't get across due to the constant flow of traffic.
'Eventually a policeman noticed him
and took pity by helping him across. The officer said it was so busy today in
London, and the man replied: Yes, there's a trip in from Matlock for the final!
'I was right behind Fenoughty's free
kick and saw the ball bend into the net! It was a great goal - happy memories!'
