ITV NATIONAL STRIKE 1979

Due to a Trades Union Dispute that could not be initally solved, ITV screens were blacked out for 11 weeks back in 1979.

In the Westward Television area, we are almost sure that the day of the black-out started on August 6th 1979 until 24th October 1979.

Westward Television came back on at tea-time on the Wednesday with national presentation from ITV . News from ITN appeared followed by Crossroads. The following day, Thursday programmes started in the afternoon again with National presentation. See the national schedule.

The makers of TVTimes had to rush out a National edition to start the following Saturday - see scan.

In this section of the site you can hear and see the famous WELCOME HOME TO ITV logo and jingle that was used to welcome Independent Television back onto the screens.

If anyone has any information that could be of any use to us on this site with regards to the ITV strike of 1979 please contact either Richard or Ed.
