Company History

Men And Ships

One of Grimsby's oldest trawler owners, their history goes back to 1896 when (Emil) Hagerup & (George) Doughty - the nucleus of Consolidated Fisheries - bought their first trawler, the Ashton. From this beginning, the firm grew and expanded into shipbuilding and formed a subsidiary company, Monarch Steam Fishing, which saw 15 trawlers built and registered to it. Rapid expansion though led to a downfall and the company found itself ailing until George Doughty introduced John Marsden (later to become Sir John Marsden, Baronet) to the trade in 1901.
This proved to be a shrewd move as, through skilfull re-organisation and 'consolidating' interests, the firm again strengthened and grew, opening branches at Swansea and Lowestoft as it did so. At one time, the company owned and operated over one hundred and fifty trawlers with more than half of these based at Grimsby.

This site concerns itself with the Grimsby based fleet only, although in time, I may expand it to cover the other fleets.
Split into distinct sections which record the growth of the company under its various name changes, the details of the vessels (and men) are as comprehensive as I can make them but new info will be added as and when I may get it. The vessels in each section are listed in the year of acquistion by the company and not in year of their build.

As new information is added to the site, it will be listed in an index to show at a glance which vessels are concerned.
Use the 'what's new' button to see what has changed since your last visit and/or if you are looking for details on a certain vessel, the trawler index below lists of all the vessels featured on the site and will take you to the relevant page.
I am, of course, open to-and would welcome-any additional information, corrections etc to the data contained on the site.
