Jiu Jitsu, or the art of pliability, is a 1000 year old martial art that utilizes skillful technique, leverage, off-balance and the knowledge of human anatomy to overcome an attacker. The practitioner of Jiu Jitsu has a large array of techniques available to him or her, including strikes, joint locks, throws, submission holds, pins and pressure points. Jiu Jitsu does not rely on brute strength but rather on flexible response and the redirection of an attacker's force. Our form of Jitsu has been developed in Great Britain during the past 20 years from the ancient art of Jiu Jitsu. We teach in a friendly atmosphere and it can be used by anyone, on anyone, armed or unarmed. Training is gradual and is tailored to your individual ability, so you do not need a high standard of physical fitness; although you'll find that endurance, strength, flexibility and speed are all improved during training. This bit is still being researched... However, our current club is going strong, especially as we have had loads of interest shown since the start of term and have had many new faces on the mat which is brilliant. Our instructors Our current regular instructors are Rob Smart and Richard Atkins. Rob has been in Hong Kong for the last 6 months, and has returned much fitter and making us feel it on the mat... Richard, who has recently joined us from Plymouth University club where he used to be an instructor, is also further enhancing our warm up experiences by making us do push ups in more different and varied ways than anyone would have thought possible (but now we know). Richard is contactable at: richardatkins88@hotmail.com. The full time head office in Bath provides the necessary services and support facilities for the smooth (!) running of all the clubs and associated events, both in the UK and overseas. The Jitsu
