Sir Steven Redgrave - an Olympian for All Time

FINAL PRESS RELEASE

STATUE UNVEILED BY THE QUEEN

On 10th May HM The Queen, accompanied by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh made a Royal Visit to Higginson Park, Marlow as part of Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee celebrations.

The highlight of Her Majesty's visit was the unveiling of the Steve Redgrave statue, witnessed by the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, civic dignitaries and an enthusiastic crowd of young and old, estimated to be in excess of 8000.

Sir Steve said "the statue seems to be a good likeness. I would have liked to see it with a few less pounds around the middle but it is very good to be honoured like that in my own home town and close to the river where I started rowing".

Hugh McNearnie, chairman of the Appeal Committee said "it was a wonderful day for Marlow and a magical moment when the statue was unveiled by The Queen".

Matthew Pinsent (triple Olympic Gold Medallist) said, "The statue is brilliant ... very, very good. It is an excellent likeness"

To honour this unique achievement, a committee of people from Marlow and Marlow Bottom has been formed to commission a statue of Sir Steven Redgrave, to be sited in Higginson Park, Marlow, overlooking the stretch of the River Thames where his rowing career began.

The Marlow Appeal for a Permanent Tribute to Sir Steven Redgrave is seeking £100,000 to meet the costs of this initiative. The committee is representative not only of many interest groups in Marlow, including Marlow Town Council, but also has the patronage and support of Sir Nigel Mobbs, Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire.

Neale Andrew BA ARBS has been chosen to execute the work. Click for his CV, pictures of his work and his proposal for the Redgrave statue.
