THE CHURCH
The church is 120 years old and replaced and earlier
chapel that was sited half a mile further east. It is
a traditional stone building with one transept (Lady
Chapel), font and stained glass windows, a small choir
vestry and even smaller clergy vestry. It is a grade
2 listed property. The Nicholson organ, with two manuals
and full pedal board, was rebuilt in 1982. The church
is furnished with pews and choir stalls and a few years
ago we installed a sound system and full induction loop.
We are fortunate to have the Church, hall, vicarage,
amenity space and car park all on one site. The church
hall is linked to the Church. If the weather is bad,
it is very convenient to be able to get to the church
hall for coffee without getting wet!
The church comprises main hall, meeting room, and parish
office. We recently applied for planning permission
to renovate and improve the facilities. The hall is
extensively used during the week by church groups and
others. These include pre-school playgroup, Brownies
and Guides, Church fellowship groups and line dancing.
(See Groups and Events for
more information.)
The recent decision of the diocese to build a new vicarage
is recognised by the entire congregation as a measure
of the commitment of the diocese to the growth of the
church.
THE CHURCHYARD
The churchyard of St Godwald's is located opposite
the Bromsgrove Rugby Club and is bordered on one side
by the famous Lickey Incline - a section of the railway
with a steep incline that, in the days of steam, required
a "banking engine" to enable the train to
climb the hill. There is a monument to William Creuze
whose unfortunate death due to an accident at the early
age of 31 led to the formation of the Institute of Mechanical
Engineers in 1846.
We try to maintain a naturalised conservation area
which has a magnificent display of snowdrops in Spring.
Churchyard working parties meet regularly- why not come
and join them?
