VINYL TO THE CORE  - Liner Notes

DISC ONE:

12/25/62 - Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey; Shimmy Like Kate; Falling In Love Again; Roll Over Beethoven
12/31/62 - I Saw Her Standing There

SOURCE: Star-Club Sampler Tapes
These are the original unedited and unprocessed recordings, with chat between songs not heard elsewhere. According to the book "From Cavern To Star-Club", this sampler tape has an extra two songs: "Sweet Little Sixteen" (12/25/62) and "Your Feet's Too Big" (12/28/62). Doug Sulpy reports that an even longer sampler tape is now in circulation with the following additional songs: "A Taste Of Honey", "Till There Was You" (incomplete), "Lend Me Your Comb", and "To Know Her Is To Love Her" (12/28/62); and "Roadrunner" (12/31/62).

4/1/63 - Side By Side
SOURCE: BEEB Sampler Tape

This version of the "Side By Side" theme song has only been booted on the vinyl bootleg "Directly From Santa Claus".

4/4/63 - Side By Side
SOURCE: "The Beatles At The Beeb, Volume One" LP

This is the second version of the "Side By Side" theme - the Pyramid and Great Dane CD releases chopped out a few notes of the music while attempting to remove the gap in the source tape.

5/63 - Bad To Me
SOURCE: "Not For Sale" LP

John's demo, from acetate. The CD release on "Acetates" has heavy noise reduction and is slightly incomplete at both ends.

5/24/63 - Pop Go The Beatles
SOURCE: "The Beatles At The Beeb, Volume Three" LP

This is the longest version available of the closing theme music, coming from the 7/16/63 broadcast. Great Dane's boxed set fades 22 seconds earlier.

6/17/63 - PS I Love You; Twist And Shout
SOURCE: "Radio Sessions 1962-1965" CD
These two tracks from "Pop Go The Beatles", episode 4, were cut from an early line-up of Apple's "Live At The BBC". They appeared from that source on this Japanese bootleg, in upgraded sound compared to Great Dane's box.

7/30/63 - It Won't Be Long (take 7?)
SOURCE: Unbooted tape
The basic tracks for part of the commercially released take, this Alf Bicknell tape has been previously booted on "Maybe You Can Drive My Car" but is in slightly better quality here.

9/3/63 - Goodbye/Pop Go The Beatles
SOURCE: BEEB Sampler Tape
Besides the usual "goodbye song" from the final episode of "Pop Go The Beatles", this tape has an extra "bye-bye" followed by the last-ever airing of the closing theme, none of which has been booted, to my knowledge.

9/12/63 - Open Message To Australia (take 4)
SOURCE: "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: A History Of The Beatle Years" radio series
Many reference books have claimed that the message to Australia on the various "Talk Down Under" interview discs comes from this date (it's actually two separate recordings from 4/18/63 and 3/2-6/64). Here we have the real thing - the first three takes were addressed directly to 2SM DJ Bob Rogers, and this fourth was an "Open Message" for broadcast on any station. This comes from reel E 50527, which also contains recordings of "Hold Me Tight" and "Don't Bother Me" that have been bootlegged in their entirety.

10/13/63 - Twist And Shout ("Sunday Night At The London Palladium")
SOURCE: "The Beatles At The Beeb, Volume Seven" LP
For a long time, this was the only song circulating from this historic performance. A complete tape of this show finally turned up on the "Roadrunner" CD, but it's from an inferior source tape (with noticable bleed-through of unrelated material) and Paul's intro to this song is less complete.

10/16/63 - "Radio Newsreel" Interview
SOURCE: "SPLHCB: A History Of The Beatle Years" radio series
This has also been released on "Attack Of The Filler Beebs, Episode One", where the source was "The BBC's Lost Beatles Tapes". This version has some extra chat with Ringo which was edited from the middle of that broadcast.

12/2/63 - All My Loving ("The Morecambe And Wise Show")
SOURCE: Videotape of original program
The other two songs from this performance have been released on "Anthology 1", and the previously-booted version of "All My Loving" (on "Hollywood Bowl Complete") had the first few seconds missing, replaced by a section from later in the song.

2/11/64 - Long Tall Sally
SOURCE: Apple's Electronic Press Kit for Anthology
This song is apparently missing from all kinescope copies of the Washington, D.C. concert, but Apple unearthed the original videotape late in the production of "Anthology". This track has very recently been booted on the Silent Sea label.

2/21/64 - Talking Guitar Blues
SOURCE: Videotape of original program
This is merely George messing around on guitar while The Beatles pack in their suite at the Deauville Hotel in Miami. We also hear whistled or sung versions of "Maria" and "Jet Song" from "West Side Story" as well as Paul and Ringo hamming it up for the Maysles brothers' camera. A shorter version of this was released on "The First U.S. Visit" videotape, but this is from the unedited footage seen in "What's Happening! The Beatles In The USA", broadcast on CBS-TV 11/13/64.

2/25-3/1/64 - "Train Music"
SOURCE: Videotape of film restoration on AMC
Producer Walter Shenson claims that this recording heard in the film "A Hard Day's Night" was performed by The Beatles, presumably when the other soundtrack songs were taped at EMI.

2/27/64 - Tell Me Why
SOURCE: Videotape of film restoration on AMC
The mix heard on the original mono soundtrack of "A Hard Day's Night" has a different lead vocal track from John to any released version. This is most noticable during the middle eight.

3/1/64 - Long Tall Sally (US mono mix)
SOURCE: "The Beatles' Second Album" LP
This is probably RM1 from 3/10/64, and it has less reverb on the vocal track than other mixes. Unavailable on bootleg CD, as far as I can tell.

3/31/64 - You Can't Do That
SOURCE: "The BBC's Lost Beatles Tapes" radio series
The BBC obviously found a superior tape of this song than had ever been bootlegged previously. This is from the 4/4/64 broadcast of "Saturday Club".

4/19/64 - Shout!
SOURCE: "Not Guilty" LP
This was recorded at IBC studios for the "Around The Beatles" TV special. The best CD source, Yellow Dog's "Ultimate Collection, Volume One" boxed set, fades the ending slightly. Here the song comes to an abrupt halt.

6/1/64 - I'll Be Back (US mono mix)
SOURCE: "Beatles '65" LP
Apparently RM3 from 6/22/64, at a slower speed than the UK mono mix, and with quieter percussion.

6/6/64 - I Saw Her Standing There; Twist And Shout
SOURCE: "De Bietels Tussen De Bollen" LP
These performances are from the afternoon concert in Blokker, The Netherlands. The first song originates in a Dutch newsreel, "Beatles Take Over Holland", and the second is from a report on the radio program "Echo".

6/6/64 - She Loves You; Long Tall Sally
SOURCE: Unbootlegged tape
Here are two songs from the evening show at Blokker. Although a better-sounding tape has been bootlegged, it is missing the end of "She Loves You" and the fragment of "Long Tall Sally".

6/23/64 - Bouree
SOURCE: "Fuck!" LP
From a recording made by Bob Rogers in the St. George Hotel, Wellington, New Zealand. This is a bit of classical-style playing by Paul which didn't make it into the legitimate "Talk Down Under" releases.

7/17/64 - Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey; Long Tall Sally; If I Fell; Boys
SOURCE: "From Us To You: A Parlaphone Rehearsal Session" LP
The complete session tape for the 8/3/64 broadcast of "From Us To You" has been on bootleg since 1978. Much of it was included on Great Dane's set and "Attack Of The Filler Beebs, Episode Two", but the songs that didn't make it are included here. The performances are the same as broadcast, but extra chat and guitar notes can be heard between the songs.

10/18/64 - I Feel Fine
SOURCE: "SPLHCB: A History Of The Beatle Years" radio series
Otherwise unbooted is the brief false start preceding take 9, which is unfortunately buried beneath dialogue.

10/26/64 - Another Beatles' Christmas Record (outtake)
SOURCE: "SPLHCB: A History Of The Beatle Years" radio series
This short segment has a few lines which didn't make it to Vigotone's "The Ultimate Beatles Christmas Collection" CD.

DISC TWO:

2/16/65 - I Need You
2/17/65 - The Night Before
2/19/65 - You're Gonna Lose That Girl
SOURCE: Videotape of film restoration on AMC
These are all from the original mono soundtrack, and feature slightly different mixes to the released mono versions.

6/16/65 - The National Health Cow
SOURCE: "SPLHCB: A History Of The Beatle Years" radio series
From BBC Radio's "Today", broadcast 6/21/65. A portion of this has been bootlegged on the LP "Not For Sale". The reading of this poem on "Attack Of The Filler Beebs, Episode Two" is probably from a different program, since it has Paul joining in.

8/19/65 - Dizzy Miss Lizzy
SOURCE: "Beatles Over Atlanta & Shea Stadium (remastered)" CD
This is one of the two songs absent from Vigotone's release of the Atlanta concert. Although the middle of the song is still missing, it's an exciting performance, notable for John's amazement in the intro at the clarity of the P.A. system.

8/31/65 - Twist And Shout; A Hard Day's Night; I Wanna Be Your Man
SOURCE: Videotape of neswreel footage
These three fragments from the final date of the Summer '65 tour are previously unbooted. It's unknown whether these are from the matinee or evening concert.

10/12/65 - Studio Chat
SOURCE: "Hodge-Podge, Volume 3" CD
It's not clear if this chat is from the "Run For Your Life" or "Norwegian Wood" session (it's been associated with both in the past), but it's clearly from this date. The first portion is from the "Sgt. Pepper" radio special, the latter from "Abbey Road Show" and the whole thing was played on "Lost Lennon Tapes", supposedly from an acetate of "Norwegian Wood" take 1.

10/22/65 - In My Life
SOURCE: "In My Life" aka "From Me To You" CD
This is probably George Martin's Hammond organ solo from the morning session of this date. He later replaced it with a half-speed piano overdub.

11/3/65 - Michelle (US mono mix)
SOURCE: "Rubber Soul" LP
Probably RM1 from 11/9/65, with louder percussion than the UK mono mix.

11/65 - "ST Side 1 2442"
SOURCE: Capitol master tape
An unknown Capitol engineer announcing Side 1 of the US "Rubber Soul".

Early '66 - He Said He Said (demos)
SOURCE: "The Lost Lennon Tapes, Volume 24" LP
Early '66 - She Said She Said (demos)
SOURCE: "In My Life" aka "From Me To You" CD
A compilation of all the known remaining fragments of John's "She Said She Said" demos.

6/25/66 - Paperback Writer (Essen)
6/26/66 - Paperback Writer (Hamburg)
6/26/66 - Nowhere Man/Paperback Writer (Hamburg)
SOURCE: "Die Beatles In Deutschland 1966!" CD
The Essen track is from the WDR radio archives - one of the two Essen concerts will reportedly be issued in its entirety on the Strawberry label. The first Hamburg track comes from the 1967 TV special "Damals In Hamburg" and the second is from vintage radio coverage.

8/14/66 - I Feel Fine
SOURCE: "Beatle Views" LP
Ken Douglas's on the spot report from the riotous Cleveland Stadium concert. According to Lewisohn, the interruption occurred during the fourth song, "Day Tripper", and we pick up here with "I Feel Fine", which may indicate that they skipped the usual fifth song, "Baby's In Black".

8/18/66 - Long Tall Sally
SOURCE: "SPLHCB: A History Of The Beatle Years" radio series
Another piece of audio verite, this time from Kenny Everett. This seems to confirm that "I'm Down" was dropped from the North American leg of the tour as a set-closer.

3/20/67 - THE IVOR NOVELLO AWARDS FOR 1966
SOURCE: Unbooted tape
Taped the same day as the interviews for "Top Of The Pops", and broadcast 3/27/67 on the BBC Light Programme, but not included on "Attack Of The Filler Beebs".

5/11/67 - Baby You're A Rich Man (US mono single)
SOURCE: Capitol single 5964
Includes the apparent partial "eleven" call prior to the song.

Late 6/67 - WHERE IT'S AT
SOURCE: "SPLHCB: A History Of The Beatle Years" radio series
Paul discusses "All You Need Is Love". This was not included on "Filler Beebs", but is probably from the 7/1/67 broadcast of "Where It's At" on the BBC Light Programme.

67 (?) - Chi-Chi's; Daddy's Little Sunshine Boy; Down In Cuba
SOURCE: "The Lost Lennon Tapes, Volumes 11/2/10" LP's
Several segments of John, assisted by Ringo, messing around with his Mellotron, presumably taped at Kenwood sometime during the year.

11/67 - Step Inside Love
SOURCE: "Rarer Than Rare" LP
Paul's demo for Cilla Black of a song she taped 11/21/67. Taken from an atrocious-quality tape of a radio broadcast.

2/6/68 - CILLA
SOURCE: Unbooted tape
This seems to be Ringo's entire appearance on the second episode of Cilla's BBC-TV series. Only the song "Do You Like Me?" has been bootlegged previously - here we also hear Ringo and Cilla reading mail and performing a ventriloquism skit with Peter Brough, including a duet on "Nellie Dean".

3/15/68 - Spiritual Regeneration/Happy Birthday
SOURCE: "Indian Ropetrick" LP
This is the slightly longer version with Wolfman Jack's narration intact. Originally from a 1976 Beach Boys radio special.

8/29/68 - Dear Prudence
SOURCE: "White Sessions" CD
A tiny snippet of backing vocals, presumably from the monitor mix tapes.

11/68 - Nowhere To Go; I'd Have You Anytime
SOURCE: "The Dylan/Harrison Sessions" LP
This tape, from a vinyl picture disc, is a great improvement over any other bootlegged copies, and was probably taped in Woodstock around Thanksgiving, although it may also date from May 1970 in Nashville.

11/68 - Everyone Had A Hard Year
SOURCE: "The Lost Lennon Tapes, Volume 4" LP
John's home demo, a little more complete at the beginning than on "1968 Demos" (but a little less complete at the end).

12/15/68 - Everybody Had A Hard Year
SOURCE: Videotape of "Rape" footage
This was also booted on the LP "Johnny Moondog", and was included in the Lennon/Ono film "Rape" following the closing credits.

DISC THREE:

Daydream/You Are My Sunshine/Whispering (DDSI 22.1-22.3)
SOURCE: "To Be Expected Sampler" CD
A glimpse of the "Apple Sessions Day-By-Day" series that never was.

Studio Chat (DDSI post-22.5)
SOURCE: "Let It Be" film
Paul and John talk about the Rishikesh home movie footage.

My Baby Left Me/That's Alright Mama/Hallelujah I Love Her So (DDSI 22.27-22.28)
SOURCE: "Et Maintenant Une Chanson" CD-R
These brief snippets are unique to the above CD, except for a few seconds of "My Baby Left Me" which were on "The Auction Tapes, Volume 1".

In The Middle Of An Island/Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen By The Sea (DDSI 22.33)
SOURCE: "Artifacts II" CD
Included on the above boxed set, but otherwise unbooted.

Dig A Pony (DDSI 22.50)
SOURCE: "File Under: Beatles" LP
From the so-called "boardroom tape", but strangely not among the John Barrett material on the latest Vigotone releases. This take is from the 8-track masters and not Nagra film reels, although here it's taped off-line with some extraneous noises.

For You Blue (DDSI 25.20-25.23-25.24)
SOURCE: "Let It Be" film
     Several fragments edited together.

Blue Suede Shoes (DDSI 26.31)
SOURCE: "The Auction Tapes, Volume 1" CD
The mix from the 8-track master heard on many boots omits much of Paul's vocal. This version is from the Nagra film reels.

You Really Got A Hold On Me (DDSI 26.32)
SOURCE: "Celluloid Rock" CD/"Let It Be" film
An edit of the incomplete studio mix and the version seen in the film.

The Long And Winding Road (DDSI 26.38-26.39)
SOURCE: "Let It Be" film

Strawberry Fields Forever (DDSI 27.2)
SOURCE: "To Be Expected Sampler" CD
A longer tape than heard on "Songs From The Past".

Studio Chat/I Want You (She's So Heavy)/Studio Chat (DDSI post-28.23/28.28/post-28.29)
SOURCE: "The Real Case Has Just Begun" LP
These segments were inexplicably omitted from the "Songs From The Past" CD's.

Besame Mucho (DDSI 29.12-29.15)
SOURCE: "Let It Be" film

Studio Chat (DDSI post-29.17)
SOURCE: "The Real Case Has Just Begun" LP
The final piece of tape available from the night before the rooftop concert.

3/26/69 - Radio Peace
SOURCE: "Yin Yang" LP
A John/Yoko jingle which Sulpy/Madinger identify as being from the Montreal bed-in. I've used the traditional dating, from the Amsterdam bed-in.

3/25-31/69 - I Want You (She's So Heavy); Jerusalaim
SOURCE: "Goodnight Vienna" LP
From a Radio Israel interview with Akiva Noff; taped in Amsterdam.

3/25-31/69 - Don't Let Me Down/Those Were The Days
SOURCE: "Spicy Beatles Songs" LP
Probably from a radio broadcast of an Amsterdam press conference.

5/25/69 - Give Peace A Chance ("moshi moshi")
6/1/69 - Give Peace A Chance (solo rehearsal + group rehearsal)
6/2/69 - Give Peace A Chance ("last chance")
SOURCE: "The Lost Lennon Tapes, Volume 24" LP
Several variations, from a Toronto interview and the Montreal bed-in.

Fall 69 - Message To Japan
SOURCE: "Doll's House" LP
While Yoko speaks, John plays versions of "Dear Prudence", the "Sun Riff" and what sounds like a rudimentary "Make Love Not War/Mind Games" in the background. It's difficult to date this without a translation, but Yoko seems to make reference to a "Washington Moratorium" - separate anti-war protests were held in DC on 10/15/69 and 11/15/69, and "Give Peace A Chance" was sung by the crowds during at least one of them.

9/69 - Cold Turkey
SOURCE: "The Lost Lennon Tapes, Volume 20" LP
John's home demo, with backing from Yoko.

11/8/69 - John BBC Interview
SOURCE: Unbooted (?) tape
This is introduced by Kenny Everett, though it's not clear whether he conducted the actual interview. This may have been included on the vinyl boot "Away With Words", but is pretty obscure (not included on "Filler Beebs").

11/26/69 - What's The New Mary Jane (RS4 + RS5)
SOURCE: "What A Shame, Mary Jane Had A Pain At The Party" EP
Since both mixes were copied at the end of the session, that's probably what we're hearing here. RS4 was a new mix from the 8/14/68 multitracks. RS5 has a simultaneous overdub of new elements over the previous mix.

2/11/70 - Instant Karma! (We All Shine On)
SOURCE: "Doll's House" LP
This is the less-common "knitting" take of John's "Top Of The Pops" performance, unfortunately incomplete.

3/11/70 - THE BEATLES TODAY
SOURCE: "SPLHCB: A History Of The Beatle Years" radio series
Several segments of chat with a surprisingly-optimistic George and Johnny Moran for a special broadcast on BBC Radio One 3/30/70, just 11 days before Paul announced the group was finished.

Many thanks to John Winn for the liner notes to "Vinyl To The Core".
