NEW! Fractint version 20.0
This site now hosts the fractint wish list page where you can leave a record of the features you'd like to see added to fractint to make it even better!
Now featuring a Guest Book where you can leave comments, suggestions and questions.
Also the Artists pages now feature change notification forms allowing you to keep track of the work of your favorite artist by email... check it out!

Your opinion needed now!

PLEASE take a little time to vote on the images as that is what this is all about. More votes are needed, tell your friends! pass it on! it's fun! it's free!.

But that's enough from me. On with the show.......

Welcome! Within these pages you will find a selection of images that have been created by many artists with two things in common, they all share a fascination for the infinite worlds generated by fractal formulae, and they all have used Fractint, the premier freeware fractal generation program, to explore these fractal spaces.

The images you will see are all the result of the manipulation of numbers by computers and all have an infinite level of detail available. Often they are 'high magnification' images discovered by zooming into what may at first appear to be a somewhat dull looking shape. Closer inspection reveals fuzzy looking areas which, when zoomed into, reveal ever more detailed levels of construction. The job of the fractal artist is to find a formula, an area within that formula , and a suitable colour scheme that will produce an image of beauty. No mean task!

In this gallery each artist has their own page featuring some images, these are displayed in thumbnail form but are also available at 648x480 resolution. It's well worth taking a look at these higher resolution images as it is in the nature of a fractal that the beauty is held in the detail. In fact many fractal fanatics^H^H^H^H^H^H artists are accustomed to working at resolutions of up to 1600x1200.

You may view the fractals at higher resolution by storing the thumbnails on disk (right-click if using netscape) then loading them into fractint. Since each thumbnail also includes data on what fractal formula was used and what parameters were set, fractint can re-generate the image. You'll need to turn off the view window mode though to get a full screen high resolution image generated.

It's interactive!

You can give feedback on the images by giving them a score, these will be added up regularly and used to derive a top ten images page and feedback to the artists. The artists pages will be regularly updated when new images are produced so keep on looking in there!

As the gallery has only just started there haven't been enough votes entered for any sorting so don't bother looking for the top ten page yet!

Copyright:

All the images presented here are copyright of the artists, any use of the images should include proper attribution. It is generally accepted however that the above terms apply only until an image has been significantly changed by the user. i.e by zooming in until things look different or by radical changes in the colour mapping.

More about Fractint (temporary link to spanky.. see below) the program you'll need in order to view the images in higer resolutions than those stored here, it'll also enable you to colour cycle them for a wonderful psychedelic effect and allows you to zoom in further and see what wonders may await!

Downloading fractint

If you're in the states then you can obtain a copy of the latest version of fractint for the PC from the spanky fractal site (scroll down a bit for a link there). As it's a 600k file then european users may wish to get it straight from this site, keep those overburdened transatlantic links free and click below:

Fractint V20.0

October 1999.
The C programmers among you can download the source code here as well it's a large file (just over a meg) but well worth it for the wealth of programming techniques and useful bits and bobs within. If you're just beginning C and fancy cutting your teeth on a chunk of real code then I can highly recommend trying to add features to fractint, a real baptism of fire!

More Fractal Links

Like what you see here? well you can do worse than to check out these sites....

Spanky!

The original fractal website run by Noel Giffin and official home of fractint on the web. Loads of stuff here including the entire fractint help documentation in html, ports of fractint to other systems, links to interactive fractal explorers, informative documents and much much more... A must for serious fractal devotees.

Fracxtra

by Dan Goldwater is a collection of colour maps, par files, formulae, utilities and other good things to augment your fractint experience... highly recommended. Due to the large amount of good stuff enclosed this is a big file (approx 1.3 Mb) but well worth it! There is also a copy of fracxtra here for european viewers.
This site is a member of the Infinite Fractal Loop, a collection of fractal gallery websites, all linked to each other via a control panel similar to the one you see below. Once you've finished your tour of this gallery why not see where it leads you?

In addition there is the eye-candy ring, these sites are all dedicated to computer generated graphics of many types, ray-tracing, more fractals, hypnotic pattern generators.... all sorts!
