Bee Facts - Do you know ?
- The Queen is fed on royal jelly.
- The devoted workers can labour themselves to death.
- The hive will grow to around 60,000 before it swarms and splits to form a new hive.
- When beekeepers smoke bees to make them drowsy, it is not the smoke that dopes them. What actually happens is that the bees think the hive is on fire and go into a feeding frenzy. Their abdomens swell and they can no longer get their stings into stinging position.
- You should not approach bees in a thunderstorm. The electricity in the air makes them aggressive.
- Until the 1870s queen bees were called kings. People could not accept that anything so well organised could be run by females.
