Hello!
Welcome to the 77th Bristol Scouts activities section. Here you can
see the kind of activities we do at our weekly meetings, camps and
inter troop competitions.
Weekly Meeting
Activities
Wide
Games
These are fun games
which are played around a wide space of area outside. They normally
involve stealth or trying to capture things/people. An example of
one of these is "Capture the flag", which involves two teams; one
trying to capture a flag without getting tagged by an opposing team
member which leads to being kept in 'Prison'. The only way of being
freed from prison is by being tagged by one of your team members.
The aim of the game is to capture the opposing team's flag to win,
but if the opposing team has all the members of your team in their
prison you loose. It's a great game!
Sports on the
Downs
Some nights we go to the
Downs (a wide open area of grass), where we play many different
sports. Some of these are rounders, cricket, football and Frisbee
throwing.
Cooking
We do lots of cooking
in SCOUTS. We cook using gas cookers, petrol stoves and Trangias. We
also cook things like pancakes, fajitas etc. We ALSO do backwoods
cooking, which is cooking out in the woods over fires. We cook
things like sausages, pancakes and chocolate bananas. It's great
fun, and very tasty!
Badge
Work
This is fairly fun work
(honest!) that can involve very fun stuff, but sometimes not so fun
stuff. It depends on what type of badge you are working towards, for
example the camp cook badge is fun.
Challenge
Nights
Around one night every year
we have a 'Challenge Night'. This involves fun games that you have
to pay extremely small amounts of money. These include 'Wack 'a'
Rat', apple bobbing, 'Play your cards right', Uno and more. This is
an extremely fun night, you must come along.
Video
Nights
Video nights are when
some people bring in a video, and we then watch a bit of it and do a
comprehension on it once it is over. It's great fun!
Quizzes
Sometimes we do small
quizzes in scouts. These are fun quizzes which are sometimes to do
with scouting, but other times are not. You should join in with
them!
Orienteering
Nights
This is also great! It
involves going around looking for points and bases in the nights.
You have to use your map skills to be good at this. You also
sometimes do activities at the bases. This is fun if it is your sort
of thing.
Camp
Activities
Archery
This is great! You get
to shoot many arrows at a reasonably close range. It is however,
quite hard, but that does not stop it from being great fun.
Shooting
As you can imagine, this is
great! You get cool, big, lead pellet guns and get to shoot these
pellets at targets using your gun man skills. At the end you get to
keep your targets, and boast to your friends about how good
your score was!
Cooking
We cook most of our food at scout
camps. This may sound boring but it is probably one of the most
enjoyable things. We cook cool things, such as eggy bread, pancakes
and more. You would enjoy it!
Canoeing
Nothing beats a good canoe down a
river. Its great fun and the danger of tipping over excites you.
However it is difficult to get the hang of paddling, but a brilliant
activity.
Xtreme
Ironing
Ok, we don't actually
do this in scouts... but it would be cool if we did. It's a
stra nge, but
cool thing that I saw on TV once.
Climbing
Yet again this is
obviously a great activity. You can climb up high places or low
places, depending on your climbing abilities. There's not much to
say, but it's cool!
Abseiling
Obviously once you have
climbed up something there's the coming down. If you're boring you
can take some steps down (probably), but if you're exciting you can
abseiling down. Abseiling is walking (or jumping), down a vertical
face. As boring as it sounds, it is really
cool.
