Falcons Gate Cottage is a family owned second home which is available for rent. Why is it called Falcons Gate? Falconry is an ancient sport passed down from generation to generation. The principles of training Falcons or Birds of Prey has remained unchanged since the earliest days of the sport. Even in this day it occupies a Falconers waking moments virtually continuously.
In February 2001 the family decided to rent a small cottage on Kielder Water where one of the family could rest and recuperate following a heart attack and surgery. and where the family could celebrate his recovery. It was also an opportune moment to thank the family for all their support.
A grandmother of the children of the family had died a short time before this and the family were still coming to terms with their loss. The family are animal lovers and between them have a hunter/trailer horse called Belle, three boxers named Jenny, Rosie and Molly, an aged Cavalier Kings Charles Spaniel nicknamed Yappy [real name Poppy as she was born on 11th November] and a scruffy West Highland Terrier called Beth. A legacy left by the grandmother allowed for the buying of Falcon Gate Cottage which was in need of some substantial restoration to bring it up to its modern day standards. It is named in honour of Nancy Rutherford and the families love of Falconry.
Wildlife seen this year are deer, foxes, a badger, rabbits and hares by the dozen. Birds seen are the resident barn owl, tawny owl, woodpecker, pheasants, bull finches, siskins, chaffinches, sparrows, blue and grey tits, swallows and swifts, rooks, buzzards, ring doves and wood pigeons
