Current System

On the right you can see the view of the screen, with a unit underneath which contains the centre speaker on the top shelf and a collection of DVDs on the bottom shelf. The screen is fixed permanently on the wall - a motorised screen was considered but was deemed unnecessary as it would not spend much time retracted! The screen is in the 4:3 ratio and is 2 metres wide by 1.5 metres high, or 80 inches by 60 inches if you prefer, giving a viewable diagonal of 100 inches. The screen is about 4 metres from the viewing position. Finally, the two front speakers are placed either side of the screen.

Here we have a three-seater sofa and behind that is the equipment stand housing all the equipment, with two rear speakers either side. You will notice that the projector is on the stand and not ceiling mounted. We decided to do it this way because it was both simpler to set-up (just place it on the shelf rather than fixing it to a bracket on the ceiling) and also allows for easy access for cleaning and lamp replacement. In order to control the equipment which is behind the sofa on the lower shelves an extender unit is used which relays the remote control commands to the equipment.

The remainder of the room comprises a two-seater sofa in front of the window with a DVD storage unit at the side nearest the screen, and the subwoofer at the other side adjacent to the three-seater sofa. Having the subwoofer here gives excellent bass and you can certainly feel it rumbling during intense scenes such as the launch in Apollo 13.
