  • 31/MAR/2002 - Paul Hickman is attempting to link the excellent RLDB database to MCQ_LOG. If he succeeds, it will represent a major upgrade!

INTRODUCTION

This program was written by myself using Microsoft Access. It's a simple database to log your listening activities. I decided to knock it together after reading a few posts in the NewsGroups asking if anyone had a spreadsheet ready-made for logging. I personally love spreadsheets but do recognise their inherent instability as a database if used by inexperienced people,
one wrong "data sort" and it's all gone!

Databases are far more reliable in this respect, since any "accidents" will generally only affect one record instead of the whole lot, so I set about creating McQLog. You will no doubt appreciate that this is the beta version and I am happy to respond to any constructive criticism. Please bear in mind though, that I'm no Access Expert, so if any experienced database designers are thinking of writing in to slate me, don't bother! Instead, get your hands dirty and sort it out for me :-)

If you choose to download the database, I would ask that you email me to register for any future upgrades. This also helps me to find out how many people are finding the database useful (not much point placing something in the public domain if no one uses it).

Enjoy!

WHAT DOES IT DO ?
Basically, it will allow you to record the following :

  • Date of log.
  • Time (Start & Finish)
  • Frequency
  • Mode
  • Station Language
  • Station ID
  • Station Site
  • Station Country
  • Station Class
  • CQ Zone
  • Tx Type
  • Soundfile Location
  • Comments
  • Signal
  • Interference
  • Noise
  • Propagation
  • Overall Q
  • Radio Used
  • Antenna Used
  • Accessories Used
  • QSL Log
Users of any receiver can use this software, since there is provision to enter as many radio-sets as you like in the database. The same goes for antennas. It's even able to log the listening records of more than one person in the same household (handy for a club too).

You'll notice from the bullet-lists above that the database will record the location of any soundfiles that you saved to your hard-drive. It will, in fact, allow you to create a hyperlink so that a single-click replays the recording.

I've included a set of Report Templates which will give you a wealth of information on your listening activities at the click of the mouse button! Additionally, you can also create your own reports once you get to grips with Access.

Here's a sample of an automated report :

You can probably just make out from the small print that this report shows the main log-items by grouping them in date order. Details include date, start/finish times, frequency, mode, SINPO and station description. You could go as far as you like and ask for a secondary type report where the report sorts on both Date and Radio type as the next one does:

The report below shows a list of stations who have not yet responded to your request for QSL Cards:

Another report shows contacts listed according to the radio used:

I suppose there's allsorts of reports that can be generated, but I don't want to spend time creating reports just for the sake of it. If people contact me and request certain ones, then I'll look at helping them out.

One thing that I've literally just thought would be handy is the "Compass Bearing" for those with beams and rotators. Hmmm, I'll do that later in the week. It's probably better not to update this beta version too soon, because it's Sod's Law that as soon as I do, someone will come up with a cracking suggestion!

Okay, I now have to write the Help Manual for the database and then I can upload everything to the Downloads Page. If you register your interest in this free software, I will contact you as soon as it is available.

In the meantime, if you can think of anything that would be really useful, drop me a line and mention it. If you think the whole idea is just a waste of time, let me know that too.
