Story 4
The first human pair sinned and became imperfect and then they were thrown out of the Garden of Eden (paradise). They had no access to the tree of life, which could help them obtain their former perfect state.
They decided to have children, but let us see if any of these children would be good or sinners just like them?
The story of Cain and
Abel and the first murder
4 Now Adam lay with his wife Eve and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain and said “With God’s help I produced a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.
Later Abel herded sheep, but Cain cultivated the ground. 3 In the duration of time Cain brought some fruits of the ground as an offering to God, 4 but Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock with its fat as an offering to God. God was pleased with Abel’s offering, 5 but he was not pleased with Cain’s offering. Cain grew hot with anger and his face became downcast.
6 At this God asked Cain “Why are you so hot with anger and why do you look so downcast. 7 If you turn to doing good, will you not be accepted? But if you do not turn to doing good, sin will crouch at you door and it will capture you, so for your own sake get the mastery of it.”
8 After this Cain said to his brother “Let us go over into the field. “So while they were in the field Cain fatally attacked his brother and killed him.
9 Later on God asked Cain “Where is Abel your brother?” To which he replied “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s guardian?”
10 At which he replied “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the earth. 11 And now you are cursed and shall be evicted from the land, which has opened to receive the blood of your bad deeds. 12 When you cultivate the ground, it shall not give a yield. You shall become an aimless wanderer and a fugitive on the Earth.”
13 In reply Cain said to God “My punishment for my sin is too great a burden to carry. 14 Here you are evicting me from the land and I shall be hidden from your presence. I shall be an aimless wanderer and a fugitive on the Earth and whoever finds me shall surely kill me!
15 Then God
announced “Not so, if anybody kills Cain, he must suffer vengeance seven
times.” And so God set up a sign for Cain, that no one will kill him. 16 Cain left God’s presence and became
a resident, as a fugitive in the
17 And so Cain lay with his wife and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son called Enoch. Then he built a city named after his son Enoch. 18 Enoch became father to Irad.
25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son called Seth. Eve announced “God has given me another son in place of Abel because Cain killed him.”
26 And Seth became the father of Enosh. Then there was a start made on calling on the name of God.
Cain killed his brother because he was jealous that God had only blessed Abel. He did a wicked thing and killed his brother, who was God’s friend. The good news is that Abel was loyal and faithful; and died for God. So, basically already one man died in allegiance to God.
Now Eve had another son and his son Enosh began to call on God as he was a believer. Although there was badness passed on genetically to the children, some of them would fight it to honour God. Some were good and quite a lot were bad, as you will see in today’s world, which has not changed since Cain and Abel.
So in this story the stage of the war between the forces of darkness and the warriors of the light was set. This can be seen in all of us as our conscience fights our sinful desires. We have good and bad in us and if we do what is right, we shall be like the faithful men and women of old and receive a blessing.
