What follows is an extract from Burkes Peerage, Baronetage & Knightage
1928 edtn., reference Steel.
"The Late Sir James Steel, Bart., of Murieston, Mid Calder, Edinburgh,
Lord Provost of the city of Edinburgh 1903, b. 13th March 1830, 3rd son
of James Steel, of Cambusnethan, co. Lanark, and Marion his wife, dau.
of Robert Reid, of Cambusnethan. He m. 8th August 1883, Barbara Joanna
Paterson O.B.E. (1918), dau. of Rev. Alexander Paterson, Presbyterian
minister at Dalry, co. Kirkubright.
Sir James was created a baronet 6th July 1903,
and d.s.p. 4th September 1904.
When the baronetcy became extinct. Lady Steel m. 2ndly, 1911, Lieut.-Col. James Hyslop, D.S.O., M.B., C.M., of
Mountain View, Pietermarizburg, Natal, son of Thomas Hyslop, of Kirkpatrick Durham, co. Kirkubright. He d. 5th
October 1917."
Sir James was the grandson of John STEEL & Mary Black of Summerside Cambusnethan,
younger brother of John STEEL. I have found no birth record so far of these men and have traced them through
death and cemetery records.
