Phil Revell - Journalist

I've been working as a journalist for ten years. Before that I was a teacher, with experience in inner city schools and ten years as head of department in a large urban comprehensive. Within a year of leaving teaching I had work published in the The Guardian and Times Educational Supplement. Those two publications are still my main markets, but I also write for other national newspapers and magazines. I am also available as a speaker for seminars and conferences.

My writing covers the full education spectrum, from early years to university. Features have looked at personalities, management issues, Information Technology in schools and policy implementation. I have an unrivalled contacts book in education and, unlike other features writers, I file news copy to both the TES and Guardian newsdesks.

I was the first print journalist to shadow an Ofsted inspection and my copy has often led the way in identifying weaknesses in government education reforms. I was the first journalist to identify the funding shortfalls that hit schools in 2003; in the TES in January of that year. Writing for The TES in March I broke the story of how the Government intended to charge parents for extra-curricular activities in schools; a piece that was followed up by most of the nationals.

In 2005 my book on teachers and teaching The Professionals was published by Trentham. The result of a research study lasting two years, the book is extremely critical of the way the UK trains and develops its teachers.

In early 2007 I will launch Journeys; an online magazine focusing on education outside the classroom.

The Archive page of this website gives a selection of my copy over the last few years. I'm based in Shropshire and that page details some of the main news stories which have broken in the area over the last few years.
