MATCH REPORT
Notts CCC visited Heslam Park at the weekend to meet Scunthorpe Town as part of Towns centenary celebrations proved a real hit.
Town won the toss and invited their visitors to bat and they quickly moved into gear as openers Guy Welton and Usman Afzaal played an array of attacking shots all around the park. Welton was first out for a brisk 27 and Matthew Dowman quickly followed for three.
Van der Berg made a good 40 before he fell to Jon Jacklin and then New Zealand Test star Nathan Astle's brisk 50, including one enormous six off Town skipper Bob Welton, whom he took a serious liking too, was only stopped from going out of the ground and surfacing somewhere near too Trent Bridge by a large conifer. Afzaal's 150 not out really entertained the crowd as Notts posted a score of 277-3 off their allotted 45 overs. Town's bowlers and fielders had a taste of what batsmen can do at that level, none more than Hari Bansal who sustained a broken thumb attempting a catch in the gully.
When Town replied they faced a varied attack, making a good attempt with openers Ian Marland (49) and Simon Kiddle (11), wickets fell at regular intervals as Town closed on 161 all out with Jon Jacklin being the next highest scorer with an unbeaten 17. Graham Sturmey acted as a sub fielder for Hari Bansal and batted scoring 8 runs.
Notts players were great ambassadors for the club and stayed around after the match for a drink with club members.
