LOUD ROCK MUSIC and strong language ..... these are just two of the ingredients of this 1991 movie.  The story of a cosseted rich girl who decides to break free from her safe, cosy world and an over-protective father is perhaps not the most original idea but somehow, with its excellent cast and medium-paced storyline, this film manages to be a little different from all the rest.

The story revolves around Courtney Wells (commendably played by talented and attractive actress Jill Schroelen), the “Rich Girl” of the title.  She was brought up in a Bel Air mansion and is surrounded by all the luxuries money can buy.  She has a fiercely independent spirit, however, and at the beginning of the film she decides she no longer wishes to go through with her marriage to her fiance, the ambitious Jeffrey.  Jeffrey is the character portrayed by Sean and when we first see him he is cheating on Courtney by having sex with another girl, Diane.  It soon becomes clear that he sees Courtney as nothing more than a way of furthering his business and career prospects and when she turns up unannounced Diane, barely dressed, is swiftly booted out of his apartment.

Having broken off her engagement to Jeffrey, Courtney then has a disagreement with her father and leaves home.  Needing to support herself, she takes a job as a waitress in a rock club and there encounters Rick Mahorn, the lead singer in the club’s hottest band.  There is an attraction between them, despite their vastly differing  backgrounds, and they soon become lovers.

Infuriated by Courtney for breaking off their engagement, and angered even more when he learns from Diane that his former fiancee is now working as a waitress, Jeffrey pays a visit to the club and makes a pretence of befriending Rick, hinting that he may be in a position to help him on the road to rock success.  Courtney’s father also learns of her liaison with Rick and once he acquires a dossier on the singer learns that he has a criminal record.  Jeffrey sets out to discredit Rick by planting drugs on him.  Rick is taken into custody but Courtney pawns a valuable piece of jewellery to buy his freedom.

As the film nears its conclusion there is an inevitable confrontation between Rick and Jeffrey.  Rick realises that Jeffrey set him up and Jeffrey comes off worse in their encounter.  Courtney’s father tries to talk some sense into her but she wants none of it, having already decided that her life will be with Rick both as his partner and as a singer in his band.

Full marks to Sean for his excellent portrayal of a rather shallow, dislikeable character who I suspect was more difficult to play than it  seemed.  We were left in no doubt as to Jeffrey’s more unpleasant characteristics, and Sean’s facial expressions hit the spot in every scene in which he featured.  I particularly liked the barely-hidden, satisfied smirk on Jeffrey’s face when he visited Courtney’s apartment and cast his eyes over the modest accommodation which she had made her home.  Fans of Sean who manage to get hold of a copy of this video will not be disappointed.
