SESL season 11 onwards - updated player values

As SESL has stricter ageing tables than MSWL, the values set out by Al Sellers below mainly relate to his MSWL league at www.mswl.org

Younger players in SESL are highly sought after, therefore the player value guide below is perhaps more accurate.   Note, this is a GUIDE, and if half way thru the season then these valuations will lower slightly as each week goes by:-

age 0 90k per Skill Level
age 1 70k per Skill Level
age 2 45k per Skill Level
age 3 35k per Skill Level
age 4 25k per Skill Level
age 5 15k per Skill Level
age 6 5k per Skill Level

 example: in SESL a 0/10 player may be worth 900k (90k x 10SL = 900k)

 example: in SESL a 2/19 player may be worth 855k (45k x 19SL = 855k)

NB. all these prices are estimates and depend on supply and demand.

ARCHIVE: How Much Are These Players Worth in MSWL?

   - by Al Sellers (MSWL Software Creator)

I've been asked by a couple of new managers to MSWL to give some thoughts on what players are worth (in terms of auctions, for instance).

Given the strict SESL ageing tables, younger players are worth a bit more than the table below suggests, and older players aged 3+ are perhaps worth a little less due to them losing Skill Level quicker in SESL.

In terms of rough guidelines on player value, I'd say it is something like this in MSWL:
Age 0--80k per Skill Level
Age 1--60k per SL
Age 2--50k per SL
Age 3--40k per SL
Age 4--30k per SL
Age 5--20k per SL
Age 6--10k per SL

(Note: as season continues, then these values should be reduced)

So when you have a team dangling an age 3, SL 19 player in front of you and they want an age 0 SL 12 player in return, do the math:
19 * 40k = 760k
12 * 80k = 960k

Its not quite equal in terms of dollars is it?  But what if that 3/19 were a GK or a UT and the 0/12 a MF player for instance?  Then that trade becomes a little more realistic.  Also, there's nothing keeping you from offering cash and a player for a player or even buying a player outright.

There are a number of variables that would affect my chart above.  A GK or a UT is worth far more than a regular position player.  Supply and demand also makes other positions more valuable at various times during a season.  In the past we've had guys go for outrageously high prices, while some bargains HAVE been found for just 1k at a player auction.

Mid-Season Skill Level loss could be a factor.  Say you pick up an age 4 SL 17 player in the 3rd auction.  You get to play that guy one session, then he loses 3 SL due to mid-season aging and is now at SL 14.  What if the same player was available in the 4th auction?  Is he now worth more?

Throughout the course of a season a couple teams may have significantly more cash than everyone else.  That could mean that they drive up the price of a player they both want.  OR the price is lower because they know they don't have to pay "market value" to get the player since everyone else is cash poor.  I'd be interested in seeing just how close my estimates actually compare with what some of the winning bids are!

Finally some quick thoughts on TP and CP.  In terms of the actual value of a TP, my best guess is something between 70-80k (however TP was traded for as much as 125k in SESL from season 7).  For CPs, the value is somewhat lower as they are more accessible, I'd say 50k.

Of course, these are my estimates and guidelines where flexibility will be important.  (Given the strict SESL ageing tables, perhaps younger players are worth a bit more than the table above suggests, and older players aged 3+ are perhaps worth a little less due to them losing Skill Level quicker)

AUCTION BIDDING

Rule number 1 - ALWAYS send in bids for every auction.  Any competent manager will see the chance is there to pick up a bargain player that most other managers may overlook, so always throw in some low bids 'just in case'!   Almost every season in SESL an auction player goes for 1k or a player is ignored completely with no bids at all.

Now in terms of bidding, say there's an Age 0 SL 12 GK out there.  Well that player is worth probably 960k for starters (12 SL multiplied by 80k = 960k).  However if you add a 20% specialty position bonus (as its a GK) its value is probably closer to 1140k.  But, if no one has that much cash, the price will be lower at auction.  What if 4 teams have more than that and they really want him the price may then be higher.   To cover yourself, perhaps send in a mid-price bid and also a high bid - e.g. 800k bid and a 1100k bid.

Bidding tactic?  Perhaps consider what players may be overlooked by other managers and bid low on those guys instead to get a bargain.   Also, don't put all your eggs in one basket - by bidding 5 times on 1 player you really want for your team could see a big team outbid you easily and then your auction is over!   Spread your bids over 2 or 3 players.

NOTE: player values noted at top of the page are values at the START of the season.   As each week of the season progresses then the valuation of players reduces slightly as ageing skill loss comes closer and closer!

Is it Worth Adding a Player to the Team?

Will an incoming new player make a big difference to your roster squad?

When it comes to adding players to your team, another way of assessing value is to view the differential in Skill Level between the new player and the player he would be displacing from the Top 17 players in your squad.  This method tends to stress the opportunity cost of the loss of value of the displaced player.

Say a 2/12 MF is offered in the auction and is worth 565k using the formula above.  The player that would be bumped out of the top 17 is 2/8.  Is it worth spending 565k to get the 2/12 (this assumes you bid and win, of course)?  The answer is clearly NO - you could better spend cash by buying extra CP and doing extra coaching.  You could add an extra 4 SL for 300k, or an extra 7 SL for 525k.  If you could be sure of trading the 2/8 to another team for 300k+ then it would be a reasonably good option for "buying" extra SL into the top 17.  The problem may be in finding a team that will take the 2/8 for that amount!
